Having just had our P.V. system installed a month ago I find it fascinating to watch how the power distribution takes place.
So my question is, does anyone understand why the inverter unit divi’s-up charge between the grid, battery and home when the battery is still sitting at a low state of charge say 4% and the panels are delivering, say ‘450 watts’ more than enough to power the domestic usage of, say perhaps ‘280 watts’.
Yet the system still decides to feed the grid occasionally with small amounts of power say 20-30 watts when in my opinion it should be the battery pack that is the main priority.
Why not pass all the unneeded extra power, in this case ‘170 watts’ directly into the battery.
So as an example, 150 watts to the battery pack and pass 20 watts to the grid!
I’ve also seen that sometimes tiny amounts of power pass from the battery pack back to the grid! Say 2 or 3 watts’ that’s very strange to me.
Then again, it could be just nice graphics wanting to show, stars and blips passing round in a circle to entertain the uninitiated.
I assume this is decided by an algorithm deep within the inverter system.

Xeroid Kid I think you may be seeing the tolerances of the metering and sensing on the system - it will rarely, if ever, be "exactly right". Plus, depending on where you are viewing these figures (portal, app?) there is the time-bucket issue to contend with (5 minutes on the portal, 10 seconds on the app if connected via home wifi) - meaning that a state of events you see lasting for maybe 5 minutes on screen might actually have corrected itself well within that time anyway.
Personally, I would see "errors" of c20W as "noise", not "data", anyway.
Thanks guys, I’m almost sure there’s not a problem. It’s just fascinating to watch the figures jump around, especially when you have too much power available e.g. when the battery is full and it’s just feed back into the grid. I’m waiting for the GivEnergy EV charger to be fitted then I can shunt it off the the car. (I assume that’s how it should work)
I’ve added a couple of screenshots to compare them with anyone who’s interested.
Our system is comprised of 10 panels taking up the full roof space integrated in the the roof. Facing almost due south.
Once we get a load of sunniness we’ll be quids in.


Xeroid Kid I just got installed too and was fiddling around with the inverter settings and inadvertently sent all my excess back to the grid (yikes). Chatted to GivEnergy and they fixed it their end by logging into my inverter which is cool. I had switched off "Eco" and had "Timed Charge" and "Timed Discharge" enabled to swallow up all the Octopus Go cheap energy from 00:30 to 04:30. Seems though, that I didn't need the "Timed Discharge" but but I did need the "Eco" bit enabled. All sorted.
The nice chap at the other end of the phone did also tell me that the inverter can't react as quick as the grid does to variations in load power (how much your house uses) so when more power is needed, the house will take from the grid until the inverter/batteries can cover it. Conversely, if excess is then being generated by the solar, it has to go somewhere so until the Inverter/batteries figure out to start charging rather than discharging, it goes to the grid unless you have your car plugged in and then it will go to that instead. In any case, there is always a little draw from and export to the grid every month because of that (so I'm told).
There is definitely a lag when it comes to data though. Myenergi seem to have that sorted on their app but I'm gonna look at GivTCP to see if I can speed things up a little

I see what your saying and it make a lot of sense to me too.
If I can get the EV charger fitted included in the system it should be VAT free.
I don't know about you but our battery runs low due to not very much sunshine and it can be exhausted by about 7 p.m. I had the car on charge yesterday and it was exhausted by 4.30 in the afternoon. Still it did need a charge! can't run round on fresh air.
