I have a GivEnergy battery and I’ve switched to Octopus Go. Apart from linking my Octopus account to my GivEnergy account using my API Key etc, is there anything I need to do to make my battery fill up with cheap rate electricity during the overnight window?

I assumed I would need to do an additional bit of set-up where I tell the battery to fill up from the grid between 0030 and 0430. Or will the battery just do that automatically because it knows through the API that the rate is cheap between those hours?

If you've added a smart tariff to either the web portal home page or the app, and haven't pressed the stop automations, then that's one way of controlling the overnight charge.

If you've used Octopus R&D to control the inverter, then that's another way. Although I think Octopus R&D have had some issues recently so not sure how reliable it would be

If neither of these have been done, then you can change the settings in the web portal, my inverter page, settings section. Make sure it is on eco mode and timed charge is enabled with the relevant times set.

Don't use timed discharge or timed export without first reading other topics on this forum.

A final option is to use external automation to control the inverter, various topics on the forum around Home Assistant, GivTCP, API access to the GE portal, PowerShell and Python etc.

Just set a desired SOC that you want to exit the cheap period using Timed Charge in the portal. Then make sure that the inverter is in Eco mode.
That's all you need to do. Nothing more complicated. Takes about 30 seconds to do.

Mine played funny when I had the API set. I removed it and set the timed charge while also having eco mode on. Been rock solid ever since nearly a year later. If wanting to change the charge level you might need to hit save a couple of times for it to register. Can also confirm that no battery discharge occurs once you have reached the required level within the time slot. Any house usage in that slot with come from the grid unless the battery is above the target level.
