I read a mention somewhere on the internet about Eon Next’s Heat Pump tariff “Next Pumped” and wanted to find out how it stacked up against Octopus Cosy which I was planning to switch to for the winter.
There’s only outline information about the tariff on the Eon next website https://www.eonnext.com/tariffs/next-pumped, to see the actual price for your postcode you have to apply to transfer to Eon. I filled in the form a week ago and didn’t get anything back. A few days later I filled the form in again, but again never heard back. This morning Eon phoned me to give me the quote; it seems that all quotes have to be done manually and “they’ve got quite a backlog”.
Anyway, how does it stack up?
For my postcode, East Anglia (DNO region A):

Standing charge: 48.251 pence per day
Super off-peak unit rate (22:00-06:00) : 16.925 pence per kWh
Off-peak unit rate (06:00-16:00 and 19:00-22:00): 21.169 pence per kWh
Peak unit rate (16:00 - 19:00): 39.435 pence per kWh
No exit fee
Octopus Cosy, variable
Standing charge: 47.7036 pence per day
Super off-peak unit rate (22:00-00:00, 04:00-07:00, 13:00-16:00) : 14.6261 pence per kWh
Off-peak unit rate (00:00 - 04:00, 07:00-13:00, 19:00-22:00): 29.8247 pence per kWh

What I like about Cosy is that 8 hours of cheap electricity is spread in 3 blocks through the day and the morning and afternoon blocks enable the batteries to be charged up ahead of the morning and evening consumption. Next Pumped is more like an EV tariff with a single 8 hours cheap rate block overnight meaning that if you don’t have sufficient battery capacity for your heat pump for a day you’ll end up importing sooner than on Cosy.
Rate-wise Cosy super off-peak is 2.5-3p cheaper, off-peak and peak are more expensive than Eon Next Pumped so if you are importing after the batteries run out, it will cost less with Eon, but I don’t feel this balances things out in Eon’s favour.
I switched to Cosy fixed on Sunday 12th October. We’re already finding the 3 cheaper periods give us much more flexibility than we had on Agile for doing the washing, dishwasher, etc.
