Throttling Solar Output?

I've noticed that when the house load is around 4KW & above and the battery is discharging at 2.5KW, the solar power output gets throttled and we end up importing from the grid. I recall that the GivEnergy Engineer mentioned about solar throttling when he came out that it was due to the new firmware in order to protect the battery, I haven't observed it until the past few days. Is what I'm describing what the Engineer meant? It's pretty annoying having the solar capacity there and importing from the grid, is this the benefit of a Gen 2 inverter over a Gen 1 one?

TRBob you are the only person that’s ever mentioned this bug beyond myself many months back.
I’ll try and find my post about it but essentially it was fixed via a quick firmware update to the inverter (so no battery discharge / charge to go through) so speak to GE and they can do it no problem.

Basically mine prioritised using the battery over PV, it’s now the other way around as it should.

TRBob here we are so if that kind of thing is what your seeing then it's a firmware fix. May need to point their tech team to it as they have had a few new starters who may not know about it. (It's firmware D0.450-A0.451 but it may be a special version as the Firmware Logs make no mention of it being fixed in it)

Not saying that it isn't the issue that hoggy suggested as you shouldn't ever see Solar throttling (assuming your PV array is with spec of the inverter).

But in an effort to, I think, more fully explain what I believe your Engineer was attempting to inform you of:

There is a limit to how much power the inverter can supply the house at any point in time:

  • For Gen 1 Hybrid 3.6 or Hybrid 5.0 the maximum combined Solar + Battery is 3.6kW or 5kW made up of upto a maximum of 2.6kW from the battery.
  • For Gen 2 Hybrid 3.6 or Hybrid 5.0 the maximum combined Solar + Battery is 3.6kW or 5kW made up of ** upto a maximum** of 3.6kW from the battery.

Using the following numbers: House Load 7kW, Solar PV 3.6kW

  • Gen 1, 3.6 Hybrid - Battery 0kW + Solar 3.6kW + Grid 3.4kW
  • Gen 1, 5.0 Hybrid - Battery 1.4kW + Solar 3.60kW + Grid 2.0kW
  • Gen 2, 3.6 Hybrid - Battery 0kW + Solar 3.6kW + Grid 3.4kW
  • Gen 2, 5.0 Hybrid - Battery 1.4kW + Solar3.6kW + Grid 2.0kW
    No practical difference between Gen 1 & Gen 2.

Using the following numbers: House Load 7kW, Solar PV 1.2kW

  • Gen 1, 3.6 Hybrid - Battery 2.4kW + Solar 1.2kW + Grid 3.4kW
  • Gen 1, 5.0 Hybrid - Battery 2.6kW + Solar 1.2kW + Grid 3.2kW
  • Gen 2, 3.6 Hybrid - Battery 2.4kW + Solar 1.2kW + Grid 3.4kW
  • Gen 2, 5.0 Hybrid - Battery 3.6kW + Solar 1.2kW + Grid 2.2kW
    No difference between Hybrid 3.6 Gen 1/2 but the Hybrid 5.0 sees a performance difference in favour of the Gen 2.

Using the following numbers: House Load 7kW, Solar PV 0.6kW

  • Gen 1, 3.6 Hybrid - Battery 2.6kW + Solar 0.6kW + Grid 3.8kW
  • Gen 1, 5.0 Hybrid - Battery 2.6kW + Solar 0.6kW + Grid 3.8kW
  • Gen 2, 3.6 Hybrid - Battery 3.0kW + Solar 0.6kW + Grid 3.4kW
  • Gen 2, 5.0 Hybrid - Battery 3.6kW + Solar 0.6kW + Grid 2.8kW
    This time the Gen 1's perform the same regardless of size but the Gen 2's perform better by using less energy from the grid.
