xander What does your system constitute (inverter capacity/type, batteries, PV array size)? What sort of EV charger do you have? What are your priorities (making sure the car is always charged, or minimising the cost over time)?

In the current weather/season, I doubt you will be able to charge your car with solar. If you manage, it will be very limited.

Over the summer, I have charged a lot, micro-managing my system and EVSE. But now generation is low and getting lower, hardly covering my house load.
Issues:

  • you need to be home at all times
  • the car needs to be plugged in, and your EVSE has to be capable of working with solar (which will only make it easier, see my earlier comment on "micro-managing")

The rest will depend on your specific setup/system.

xander with 18 panels if it’s a Givenergy inverter, I expect it’s a HY5. As @rio911 says you’re unlikely to be able to put much in the EV if you prioritise the house battery. We have been able to keep our EV fully charged from the end of March to the end of October from PV but now we are charging EV overnight once a week and keeping the house battery at 70% overnight to ensure we don’t import at peak rate before off-peak starts again the next night.
