hi, i have just purchased a turbine to help with energy during the winter and night time as i have a heat pump, it is a
Tesup Atlas 4 with Turbine + charge controller + inverter could someone let me know how best to connect into my system, we have a give energy solar system with battery CE2133G175 the guy that fitted the solar system isnt interested but i do have an electrician

Alistair-Robertson did you have any difficulty getting planning permission? It looks like a single wind turbine is a permitted development unless there is also an air source heat pump. Apart from DNO interest I can’t reconcile why an existing ASHP would render a wind turbine a non-permitted development.

not applied for planning, the turbine is only 1 metre high as a barrel type construction, consider it as permissible but as heat pumps and renewables are the buzz word , i don't think i will have any issues, if i do, ill apply for retro planning

Alistair-Robertson In all honesty there is no way that anyone on here will, or should, give you advice on this.

It is going to depend on so many factors here are a few examples!!!!

  • How is your existing system connected to the grid.

  • What size of cables did they use (will they handle the current generation). Typically with a 3.68kw install this will be on a 4mm cable and 16A breaker but you may need to use 6mm or 10mm and a 32A breaker.

  • Alternatively you could install another feed from you meter/consumer unit. Either using Henley blocks or use a 24hr/off peak isolator switch coupled neutrals (like this https://proteusswitchgear.com/products/100-amp-24hr-off-peak-isolator-switch-coupled-neutrals/)

  • Technically if you want to export energy back to the grid you will need an MCS certified installer to do this for you.

  • If your current system is installed with G98 approval (sub 3.68kw inverter) and as that's a 4kw Wind Turbine you would need DNO approval.

  • This would be either G99 A1.1 which you are required to apply for in advance, can take upto 90 days and can go one of 3 ways:

  • 1. No

  • 2. Yes, no fee

  • 3. Yes + FEE (upto approx £750 depending on DNO)

You could also, POSSIBLY, try for the G99 A1.2 (which can be applied for post installation) BUT this would be dependent on your system being setup so that it does not EXPORT more than 3.68kw.

As Tim already mentioned if you have an ASHP already then you will also, most likely, require planning approval:

Only the first installation of any wind turbine would be permitted development, and only if there is no existing air source heat pump at the property. Additional wind turbines or air source heat pumps at the same property requires an application for planning permission.

As I said it's a LOT of moving parts.

Looking at the inverter it appears that it is simply a Growatt. Here's the information page for them to so you can download the relevant manual for install and set up procedure:

With that large base unit I am not sure how you intend to mount that - will depend on your roof, assuming your roof mounting that is...

Alistair-Robertson I'm confused as to why you need a charge controller and inverter for your wind turbine, unless you plan to use it to charge a battery and then use the inverter to convert battery power to domestic mains power. From the video and one forum post that I looked at, the turbine generator looks to be 3-phase? That would be a reason why you couldn't connect it directly to the domestic mains power consumer unit. Maybe get your electrician to look at it before you do anything else.

By the way, I think that you would need to inform your DNO of the installation. Even if your existing solar installation came under G98, they would want to know about the additional capacity and that the equipment was compliant with G98/99/100 (whichever is relevant to your installation) type testing. Your electrician should be aware of these requirements and be able to advise.

Tim Yes it is a 3 phase but that's 3 phase DC and the controller converts this into single phase DC which can then be sent into an inverter.

The Growat inverter is a single string (will only accept one input) hybrid inverter in itself. So you could connect batteries to this and benefit from DC to DC charging (its about 10% more efficient than converting to AC).

Don't think its possible to connect this directly to the GE Battery system though....

So you would need either a separate battery.

You would then have to connect it in the same method as your PV System & Battery which would be controlled by the Growat application on your phone/desktop.

If you have success with this new version 4 please let us all know. I would like another source of generation for the winter.

I looked at a previous version of this 18 months ago and found lots of reviews of the units falling apart in high winds. Something to do with no lockable blades? People on youtube modding them to make them safe. Most likely need planning permission. Needs to have clear air higher the better. Open space. Coastal? But I am keen to get anothe source of generation going.

magician2905 Correction - its entirely possible its 3 phase AC then converted to single phase DC to allow it to be used in a standard/hybrid inverter.

I have no experience with Wind Turbines but looking at the specs I would personally try the MAGNUM 5 Wind Turbine:

When the blades are covered during a Hurricane Category 3 or higher, they cannot catch the wind. The wind turbine’s rotation stops, and the mechanism is thus protected.

If the winds are 111mph+ I'm more worried about my roof than the turbine!!

Sadly from what I can tell renewabledevices.com have been in and out of administration many times over the years and look like they are in liquidation once again. Its a shame really as it looks, on paper, to be a decent product. One of the bigger plus points is the low noise rating

thanks for your help,
im probably going to change the nuts and bolts to stainless steel and ny-lock nuts, plus thread lock as im coastal and going to have it epoxy sprayed grey to suit my installation, ill let you know how i get on .
we will be running back to the metre point with at least 10mm swa to give capacity for other stuff, shame we can't go into the give energy battery, would have made life a bit easier .

Do you have the Hybrid or AC GivEnergy inverter? The AC is capable of monitoring of generation sources. I checked with GE when I was looking at a turbine back in July 21.

When I read the planning rules one is allowed a single wind turbine or ASHP per curtilage. Not knowing what a curtilage was, I did some research. For people like me who have a property big enough for a wind turbine, it is my understanding that the house and some outbuildings are one curtilage, and the agricultural area is a separate curtilage, so you may not need planning!
