Hi,I have a 9.5kwh Givenergy battery installed a week ago charging from a go faster tariff starting at 21:30,no solar.I have the battery set to start discharging at 06:00 but it is still discharging 16% of the capacity to the house from the end of the charge period to 06:00?
It appears to be ignoring the discharge start time, any ideas.

MrGrimes It's not your fault that your installer didn't give you a quick run around the way in which the inverter is designed to operate.

  1. Enable ECO mode - this will minimise grid import by drawing from battery when it has charge.
  2. Enable Timed Charge - Set your Charge to % to whatever you want the battery to be at at the end of the charge period. During the charge period, the house load is drawn from grid as well as charging the battery. When the timed charge period ends, the inverter will revert automatically to ECO mode.

That's it. No timed discharge or export is needed. Just set those two modes, tweak the charge to % or battery charge power if you want but otherwise leave them alone; sit back and relax.

I agree!

Hi, I've just had a 5.2kWh battery fitted and all seems to be well apart from one strange behaviour: - I've used the dashboard set the battery to fully charge from the grid between 00.30 - 04.30 (Octopus Go cheap rate) and to discharge to the house from 17.00 to 20,00. The battery is charging to 100% when it should, but then starts to discharge to the house immediately, ignoring the delay requested. Its doesn't seem to matter when I set the required discharge time, it just starts dischraging as soom as the charge finishes. Am I doing something wrong?

erdqphk Just read my response above. Enable ECO mode to get the best out of your inverter. Set Timed charge if you want to top it up off-peak. Don't use timed discharge or export.

I have the same conditions as detailed by erdqphk. At the moment my solar is delivering next to nothing and, assuming that leaving the battery constantly fully discharged is not a good thing, I have it set to charge, from the grid, during the quiet hours (02.00 - 06.00 and that works just fine). I then WANT to discharge from the battery at peak consumption times - 17.00 -20.00 and have set the timed discharge for that. However, just like the previous post, it is discharging immediately the timed charge period ends. I have the system set in ECO Mode with timed charge and discharge enabled.

Tim, could you explain why Timed Discharge should not be used? I am on a 2yr fixed price energy deal from Octopus and they advise that it will be cheaper for me to continue with that than to change to one of the 'Economy' tariffs. So, it makes no difference when the batteries discharge (does it?), other than to relieve pressure on the grid at peak times.

Unlike Timed Charge, Timed Discharge doesn't seem to revert back to Eco mode once the Timed Discharge period ends.

If you have enough battery capacity, then just leave it in Eco mode. This will minimise grid import and export. Yes you might run out of battery before your preferred period, but it doesn't make any difference overall. If you import, say, 10kWh during the day it makes no difference it that import takes place over 1 hour or 5 hours.

Davegreen1 timed discharge

Use timed export not timed discharge and only trigger it just before needed and check/reset to Eco when finished.

I do exactly what you want to do - fill batteries overnight and export during teatime peak.

Davegreen1 @Zakalwe has explained the issue with Timed Discharge and @GribinIsaf has explained what they do to benefit from time of use tariff. I'd check time of use tariffs because whatever the fixed deal is from Octopus, if you can get a ToU tariff that has an off-peak rate that beats your current fixed, the as long as you have the capacity to load shift, it could be cheaper overall.

GribinIsaf Use timed export not timed discharge

I do not see a distinction in the inverter tab? i only see discharge 1 settings. (and discharge 2)

Timed Discharge dumps the battery into the home during a specified time. I interpret that as being similar to Eco mode except it only operates during the specified times.

Timed Export discharges the battery at full pelt during the specified time. I assume that some would be to the home and the rest to export?

positor1 I think you’re on the inverter remote control page. Just go back to the portal homepage with the generation, consumption, battery charge etc summary at the top. Click on the inverter card to make it fill the space below that summary. On that card there are buttons for General, Software, Notifications , Settings and so on. Click on settings and you’re then in the place where most people tweak the inverter settings and you’ll see the timed discharge and timed export bits.

Tim
you are correct sir. i have not been on that page before. can this page cope with setting timed charges and timed exports or just one or the other like the page i use?

#14 positor1

think i have answered that myself, timed export over rides eco and holds the current SOC
thank you Tim

Tim Is it just your opinion to not use timed discharge or does that mode simply not work?

T

Fat-Les Timed discharge is reported to work just fine but if you want to use Eco mode, then you're stuffed. Timed discharge (and export) holds the battery at the level it is at when you set the timed discharge/export. At the start of the timed period, it does what you set it to do, and then stops. It doesn't revert to Eco mode as it does with a timed charge. I'm not sure if the inverter supplies house load from PV (if available) during the period after setting the timed discharge/export as I've never had reason to use it.

I think the Octopus Scheduler can set modes back and forth in half hour chunks (including eco mode) although I’ve never tried it.
I recall there being a message about it on there when you hovered / clicked it.
