Hi
Very new to this so please bear with me. We have panels and a battery, we also now have a smart meter. When we have power in the battery why is it drawing from the grid ( and costing me money ) I would have thought it would use the battery power before resorting to grid power.

Gmann What is the load and what is the capacity of the inverter?
And how are you determining the grid is being used? From the portal or from the smartmeter display?

Its a GivEnergy 5.01 Hybrid and the battery is a 8.2 Kwh Life 4. I am taking the reading from a smart meter.

Is it pulling power (>100W) from the grid for long periods of time? If it is, then there is probably an issue somewhere.

If it is only small amounts (<100W), or larger amounts for short periods, then this is quite normal, as your inverter reacts to changing loads in your house.

If you are looking for more detailed support, it may be worth posting some pictures of your system graphs, so we can take a closer look.

Hi Chris
I believe it does as you say so i guess this is normal. I think i need more time to understand how this setup works. I appreciate your help, many thanks.

There is a lot to learn, even for people with technical or electrical/electronic backgrounds. Sadly, GE is very bad at communicating information with it's customers, and even its installers.

You could do a lot worse than read through an unofficial Wiki which Terravolt has started to put together, in a attempt to fill the void left by GE. https://wiki.terravolt.co.uk/

The new software which was supposed to be released last Friday, is rumoured to have a much faster response/settling time, so these brief imports and exports may get even more brief, if the software ever makes it into the wild.

Try to use the Portal rather than the (more limited, and less reliable) App.
