V2L as a source for battery

Not sure if this has been already discussed but quick look thorugh topics did not give any results.

Has anyone tried to use their V2L capable vehicle as an another source for the AC inverter? would it work at all?

Could I add V2G and V2G to this? In fact does anybody have any suggestions as what can be used at present, not just on trials?

BarleyRiser not much available for V2G or V2H outside of trials at this point as far as I can tell. I’d certainly consider V2H and a second car as an option when the chargers become available to all.

Fishmanos not an electrician but I imagine some grid isolation would be required hook the AC inverter the a cars V2L output? Not sure charging one battery with another would be the most efficient way to go, but suppose it might be an emergency option.

dcsh EV batteries run at approx either 400V or 800V and V2H requires an external inverter and signalling electronics. The GivEnergy battery is 50V. Unless I've misunderstood the intent of the original post, this won't work.

My idea was more along the lines of using energy stored in a car to feed a battery through an inverter exactly the way the solar panels are connected to it, as as far as I understand it, technically there is no difference between power coming from panels let'a say generating 3kW and same amount of power coming off of the car plug, I guess the difference would be in the fact that power from the car plug would be 240V and from solar that would probably be less, but I am not sure on that. As I see it, the fact that the voltage from car is static should make it easier, but I might be totally wrong.

Fishmanos I suppose you could replace the AC grid supply to a GivEnergy inverter with a suitably-powerful 230V ac V2L output. You would be using a battery to charge a battery and it would take hours... why would you want to do this?

stevelewis and Fishmanos as I understand it V2L with a UK plug socket would operate at 240v using an onboard inverter (possibly the some used for charging the car in reverse), that is how is powers coffee machines or air fries in various YouTube videos about the Kia EV6 or Hyundai Ioniq 5. I believe an AC inverter would also operate with an input at this voltage ie just hooked into the mains. Solar panels and home batteries run at different voltages/amps and therefore require inverters between each other and the mains.

The trials I've seen are V2G. This would be useful on a decent tariff. The Nissan Leaf can do this in the trials, but the Chademo connection seems to be on the way out. The V2L is interesting as there are a number of cars with this capability, but what use could be made of it?

Indra have both V2G and V2H trials https://www.indra.co.uk/v2h/ but as you say 9th Chademo at this point. The CCS standard has been expanded to include this, but not sure any car support it yet, will be interesting to know if this can be updated in existing car with hardware or software?

stevelewis Well, it is not so much about charging battery with battery but having a big batery in the car that can also be used to power home without the need for v2h technology capable vehicle/inverter as there is no real availability of those atm. If possible I see it as a stop gap untill v2h/v2g will become mature enough and widely available. I'd rather have my car and home battery charging on the cheap tariff overnight and then use both batteries during the day to power house than having the car sitting on the driveway with all this energy stored and me having to purchase additional batteries if I want to cover full day's energy usage of my house.

I still think the V2L output could be connected to a spare MPPT string input. A small AC to DC inverter would be required, but cannot see any technical reason why this could not be achievable?

dcsh the current V2G equipment doesn't get on well with home batteries. I was considering the trial myself but decided not to proceed when I read that the only way to prevent frequent cross-charging is to disable the home battery, which defeats the object.

anthonypar you would also need galvanic isolation, leakage/overcurrent protection, etc.

anthonypar This made a lot of sense to me, but then realised that although a 240v input from V2L would probably work ok as a virtual second solar string, the input would be AC from V2L, whereas solar inputs are DC. I still think there might be some way of doing this and might ask my installer once my next EV with V2L arrives.

vera_GE For input to hybrid inverter yes, it is DC, but afaik for battery with AC inverter, PV needs to have its own DC/AC inverter before it sends the power to the home, as those two pieces are basically connected to the home installation but separately. I might be wrong though but that's how I understand it, so adding another "source" of power as an inverter/controller to which V2L will be connected would just be connecting another device to the home loop.
