Where to start? Firstly, you need to make sure you know where your devices are attached to the network and what their IP addresses are. Do you know how to access your router to see connections?

You also need to be on the same network - so if your inverter is on the guest wifi and you are on the normal house wifi, it won't work.

anglefire It is possible to have both on different subnets - if the router is configured to allow it and 'route' meassages accordingly. This is how I have mine set up. It is also how I can access the router locally through a vpn.

cluelesscris Well, yes you can, but with no disrespect to the OP intending, I thought that outside the scope. Routing between subnets, unless carefully done (Not saying you haven't) makes the whole point of subnetting for security pointless.
VPN is a whole different other story - as it happens I've just setup a cloudflare tunnel, which is secure and needs no ports in the firewall opening - I have setup a VPN too, but being double natt'd does also have its own foibles and the tunnel is far easier and much easier to setup. Also doesn't need a fixed IP (I do have one, but its not required - VPN doesn't as long as something is used to update the DNS records etc)
