Charge Battery using off-peak electricity?

Hi,
Only just getting to grips with new system and wondered if it was possible to charge a battery using cheaper, off-peak electricity?

SteveTaylor Sure is, use the AC timed charge settings in the inverter remote control section of the portal.

Make sure you know exactly what your off peak hours are - they vary with DNO/supplier across the country. It can be expensive if you get it wrong!
When you set your timed charge it is best to cover the whole of your off-peak period. The battery will charge in a few hours and then when it reaches the end of the charging period it will start to supply the house. When your overnight base load takes power from the battery the grid keeps it topped up so you start the day with a full battery.
Also, in very cold weather it is best to spread out your overnight charge for as long as possible, as the charging process keeps the battery warm when temps drop below zero. You can slow down the charging process and make it longer by reducing the charge rate (inverter tab, battery settings options) -This is only really needed in very cold temps. Some people have designed automations to charge and discharge the battery to keep it warm and functioning well in sub zero temps (charging will stop if the battery temp falls below zero, but discharging can still continue).

You may discover a setting in the inverter to use "Tariff Automations" but I think most people find this can override other settings, so it is best to ignore this and set times up manually.

Fwiw, I am planning on setting up on Octopus Agile, setting timed charge for 1:30AM - 6:30AM, and timed discharge from 4:30PM to 11:59PM. I will also adjust the charge target - so in summer months I might charge the battery to 50% so it can charge from sunshine in the day. In winter I would set it to 100%. I don't think I can be bothered - but in an ideal world I would set that charge target daily through automation based on the weather forecast.

It would mean I end up exporting more on sunny days, but I am comfortable with that.

MattWhitfield I found when I set my battery to charge to say 50% during its timed charge, that when the sun came up the 50% was maintained rather than exceeded. The excess was simply exported. Not what I expected.

Now, I can see why that could be useful (sort of), but not what I was expecting. The reason I did it, was that at the time I did not have an export contract set up, so I had no interest in exporting.

Suggest you check if your battery gets charged beyond your 50%, if it then exports then you know why. I did contact GE, who agreed that this was not the intention. The battery percentage is meant to be associated with the timed charge, so that the battery is always filled to 100% before 3 exporting.

If you set a Timed Charge then the system will try to achieve that set SoC level and maintain it at that level until the Timed Charge period expires. I'm not sure why you'd expect it to do anything other than what you have told it to do!
