Hi, I've got a solar + battery system and am thinking of adding a second battery. Obviously a second battery will increase storage capacity, but does anyone know if it also increases the max discharge rate? Thanks.
Question about 2nd battery
tpotter It depends on what battery you Got and what inverter?
AC coupled max 3kW
Hybrid gen 1 max 2.6kW gen 2 3.6kW 🤔

Charge and discharge are inverter limited, adding batteries just increases storage, if you add inverter and battery you increase everything. But there are issues with dual inverters at the moment. There is a new box called an EMS due Q2.

THALL Not sure that's 100% right. I had an AC3 with a single 5.2kWh battery was was only seeing 2.5 kWh discharge max. Went up to 3.3 when the 8.2 kWh one was added.
Now there might have been firmware changes with the second battery that enabled it, but there was definitely a difference in adding the second.
kai believe batteries are set to discharge rate of 0.5 of the capacity. So 5.2 Bat is 2.6 max discharge rate.
Then the inverter has a maximum throughput too.

kai But the flow is all via the inverter, the smaller batteries do have limited output, the 5.2kw is indeed limited to 2560w. But the larger batteries can charge / discharge more than a single inverter can do. The AC3 is limited to 3000w, the data sheet used to say up to 10 seconds of 3600w but I think this has changed. You will also see different amounts of charge discharge depending on where you look. The battery will report higher watts than the inverter due to conversion loss from AC to DC and vice versa. The Gen 2 hybrids can do 3600w sustained, the AC3 3000w. There was talk of an AC5 but that never appeared, and obviously the new All In One offering 6000w sustained and 7200w 10 second peaks.
My bad though, the orignal post didn't mention current inverter model nor battery. I just assumed larger battery.

THALL Yeah I was missing the 5.2 0.5C limit that @TX200 pointed out. I got the second, larger battery fitted and noticed the discharge rate had changed. Had it in my head it might be related to the extra battery rather than simply a better battery.
Charge/discharge max rate is now inverter capped for me, previously it was battery capped.
My AC 3.0 will discharge my 9.5kWhr battery at 3.3kW. Plus whatever solar I'm generating.
