Battery full 100%from off peak E7 …PV shows 142 W …load 34….dashboard shows 60 Wh going to grid…I don’t have a feed in arrangement…?

From what you have written it's all working as expected. If your battery is full and gneration is in excess of load your will export - it has to go somehere.

It's not summer yet - get yourself on an export tariff so you get paid the most for what you export. If your solar array is of any size export will be considerable on sunny days, esoecially in late spring and early autumn when the sun is shing but the panels don;t get too hot to reduce their top end.

The other thing you can do is have a plan to use excess whenever you can instead of exporting. Washing Machine, Dishwasher, Vaccum (you'll be surprised how much energy they use) but best of all an immersion heater. You can get devices that will automate diversion of excess generation to heat hot water and reduce your boiler energy use.

To get a feed in tariff you will need your MCS certificate and a copy of the DNO letter or email saying your system was acceptable to them (Your installer will have applied to the DNO, so he should be able to give you this, as well as the MCS certificate). If he hasn't done that yet CHASE HIM LIKE MAD!! You can't apply for a SEG export tariff without these! Get one ASAP. It doesn't have to be with your existing supplier - you can go to anyone. EDF and Octopus offer better rates if you source your electric through them. A few companies won't accept you if you have a battery, but most do - you need to check. This may help.....

The other thing you can do is look at the weather forecast for the following day. If it is going to be sunny you can reduce the amount you charge the battery from E7. If you use the portal, go to the inverter tab , select settings and timed charge.
You can either:

  • shorten the charge period.
  • reduce the "charge to %" (a few people have issues with this working correctly)
  • or you can go to the battery options and reduce the rate at which it charges.
    Don't forget to press "submit" to activate the change - you should get a green banner confirming the setting has changed - sometimes it takes a couple of goes to register.
    Only try one option at a time so you can see the effect. For me today - I'm in the south - cloudy this morning but sunny late morning and afternoon - I charged to 85% last night. Yesterday - cloudy all day I charged to 100%. As the days get longer and sunnier you can reduce how much grid power you use to charge the battery. It's all just trial and error really.

ONEIL Wholeheartedly agree with Karen's advice.

Only thing to add is to use Solcast for a "second opinion" on the weather. Once you have set up your system on the Solcast website, you can add a card on the GivEnergy portal to view easily.

As cluelesscrisis says, use heavy load items (and I agree vacuum cleaners do use a significant amount) when the sun is shining. Also be aware that you will see small amounts of grid import and export when the battery is not full as the inverter uses the grid to balance changes in demand.

Thanks Karen….so it doesn’t make sense to off peak charge to 100% as a “default “ setting if excess solar during the day redirects to the grid when it could be going to the battery…?

ONEIL Eco with timed charge for E7 off peak. As Karen says you can vary th target charge % to suit the weather for the following day. Generally this means tweaking the % down from 100% during the winter but up from 30% or so in the summer. During periods of long sunny days in summer you may not even need to charge the batteries overnight at all - depending on your level of consumption - as they may be full even as the sun goes down. Also, manage the charging thoughtfully when you are away and overall household consumption drops dramatically.

Yes, ECO is best setting for day to day operation. I only charge to 100% if it looks like it is going to be heavy cloud all day. If I get it wrong, then I do the hoovering or do some baking - that uses up the excess,, and I sell some back to the grid at peak times to cover the cost of my miscalculation
