Ballpark cost for third battery?

Considering adding a third 5.2 battery to my system - anyone have an idea of the likely cost? Just the battery to link onto the existing two, all the same rating. No additonal inverter.

My installer wanted £3K for another 8.2
Couldn't get the sums to work so went down the DC Charge Controller route instead. Should everything not all burst into flames when it arrives i'll report back as it seems an easy route to get around the 2.5KW battery output limit on the Hybrid 5.

What is the feeling here about warranty if I got the third battery installed by someone other than the original people?

wilfleek The original installed will need to be told and be ok with someone else making changes to a signed off system. In a previous post on these forums I raised this question and GE said it could affect my warranty. EON installed my home battery system and they include the extended 10 year warranty on the AC3 as standard, when I asked them if I could have another installer attach a second battery they simply said no and if I did that would void the additional 5 year warranty on the AC3.

Just need an installer to connect, which should be less than an hours labour. If your quote is too high based on that, challenge the installer to justify why

It may be an hours labour on site, but they have to get there and get back and if they can’t fill the rest of the day because of your job those hours too.
If I do a job it’s a minimum 1/2 day labour - that’s only because I know I can fill the other half these days.

Just had an extra 5.2kWh added, and my system 'saw' the new battery (the % number dropped - the system sees the batteries as one bigger one) but note the installer then had to ring Giv for them to do something, including discharging both batteries, and full recharging (at peak prices 😭) to recalibrate the system. Also, Giv sent some software to go on the USB in the inverter, to update the new battery to have the same software as the existing one.

pjb904 That would have been a firmware update to keep them the same. I did mine yesterday after failing several times over the air.

anglefire How did you get it to work? I have tried a few times from the portal - the last time it seemed to complete and actually did a battery calibration run, but the firmware still did not update after that.

I contacted givengy - gave them a call basically and they emailed me the file. You have to take the battery cover off, remove the usb and copy the file onto it refit the usb back in the inverter. At which point after a couple of seconds it will flash red (well mine did) bleep and reboot installing the firmware. Simple enough as long as you are confident enough to remove the cover really. That’s the hardest part!

There is more than just labour fee's. Sparkies are not cheap! Lots of insurance and other costs to pay. I would be surprised if it could be done in less than an hour too, if it is done well I would of expected it to take longer.

THALL quite, an hour's actual labour might end up with a couple of hours of travelling, another couple of hours completing certification paperwork and that's before you get into insurance, professional body membership fees, tooling etc.

Yes a good few of those are business expenses and can be written off against their tax bill but it's still a lot more work than appears when you just look at on site time.

wilfleek OK, Thats too far, but I have a guy, and he could do an excellent price. A full second battery takes about 30 minutes to install and then about 30 minutes on the phone with Givenergy. Then the electrician leaves and the baterys fully discharge and fully recharge to set their SOC ...

THALL That is not the best price.

Still not sure about warranty issues if this extra battery is installed by someone other than the original installers (system is only a couple of month's old).

anabanet The price I suggested was fully fitted, not just the battery 😄 If I could get one installed for £2656 I might have gotten the second.

hwextreme My battery installer was EON. However I have decided against a second battery, I would only really benefit from it for 3- 4 months a year and it would only save me maybe £150 per year at most. I am going down the extra solar route.

The other installer I am working with is CRC Electrical. They install GE batteries, I currently have them spec'ing up the maximum amount of solar panels I can fit on my remaining roof space. Pretty impressed with them so far.

Jumping in, the one hour labour might be all it requires but sometimes it may take much longer. On my initial installation the sparky got to starting it up in the afternoon. He had to return the following day. Apart from not being able to do two in one day the job may take far longer.

I am very tempted but would avoid the cheap rates just for peace of mind.

When I asked GivEnergy they said both batteries need to be about same % charge and both need to be on same firmware.
Factor in some time in case you need to muck about as above
