Battery Calibration not complete?

Hi all,

I have my system installed about a week and a half ago on the 22nd February but it doesn't look like my battery has done it's calibration. It drained to 0 and then charged up to about 4 percent but I was expecting it to charge to 100% like the installer said it would.

It seems to be working in terms of charging when solar is available and when it's below 4% it charges from the grid overnight. It also discharges okay when it has been charged by the sun so I may be worrying about nothing.

I am concerned though that my "Commission Started" and "Battery Calibration" don't have corresponding completion messages so I am worried that my battery won't be able to use it's full capacity as it hasn't done a calibration cycle.

The battery is showing at firmware version 3009 but had started at 3008 so I kind of dismissed the lack of a full charge cycle to a change in the firmware causing it to no longer requiring a full cycle.

Should I get onto my installer to complete the commissioning and to trigger a battery calibration or should I go direct to Givenergy as I guess it will require their systems to do it remotely anyway?

SolSucker You can check back on the portal for data for each day to see if the battery ever did charge to 100%. If not, either Givenergy or your installer can initiate a calibration remotely. If the battery firmware went from 3008 to 3009, it should have recalibrated anyway as it does that after each firmware update.

Just be aware that during calibration, the battery will likely continue discharging when it is indicating 0% SoC and will continue charging for some time after it reaches 100% SoC as in both instances, the inverter is finding the absolute lower and upper voltage limits before applying the 15% (+4%) lower and 5% upper operating limits.

Tim should have recalibrated anyway as it does that after each firmware update

positor1 I think the beta firmware is calibrating all the time isn't it? The old fashioned concept of drain until it's empty then fill until it overflows has been superseded by something a bit more subtle and thought out?

Tim Thanks for the reply. I have been checking on the portal frequently since my install and it has never charged to 100%. The highest it has got to is 54% which was provided by solar. The only thing I think might have caused this is that I had a smart meter installed last Monday and I had to shut everything down else the installer wouldn't touch it. Would that have stopped a calibration cycle?

I've no wisdom to offer, as I only had by battery installation completed yesterday, but I'm experiencing the exact same thing. The message I have is "Please leave your system while it calibrates. It will take a few hours. We will let you know when the calibration is finished", but the experience so far is:

  • Solar died off as evening set in with the battery saying it was on about 30%.
  • Battery drained to about 15% over the next few hours then suddenly stopped providing power and dropped to 0%.
  • It then pulled from the grid for a short while to reach about 5%.
  • At no point has it charged itself to 100% as my installers also said it would.
  • It's currently working how I'd expect it to, in that it's mostly charging slowly right now under the fairly miserable overcast sky.
  • Still no message saying calibration is complete.

if you have set battery charge to solar only, not solar and grid -that would explain it stopping and discharging .though one would expect the calibration cycle to override that.

My experience has been that during the calibration phase which according to the messages i recieved had successfully completed the battery will charge from the grid. But, since the calibration has finished i used the app (ios) to change the discharge mode to scheduled eg 7pm - 7am. But i notice that despite this the battery continued to supply the house during the period 7am - 7pm. Is this a known "feature" ? I have charge set to solar only.

Yes, perhaps think the installer interrupted the calibration somehow by changing other settings maybe? I didn't do anything to the settings myself until well after the calibration should have been completed, assuming "It will take a few hours" means less than a day.

As an experiment I fully charged the battery from the grid yesterday, to see if that would help to complete the calibration, but nothing happened.

What are the consequences of the calibration not happening? The state of charge indication is inaccurate? I've seen it jump from about 90% to full already. Anything else affected?

Fraz Thanks for the reply. I think I have resigned myself to wait until the new battery firmware is released as I think the battery will do a calibration after the firmware has been updated. I have seen posts that have suggested that people have contacted Givenergy directly and they have triggered a remote calibration, so you might want to go that route if you feel the need.

Fraz This is exactly the same behaviour I’ve had. The 5.2 battery installed when the system was commissioned in January discharged as the installer said it would, but then I never saw a full charge-up as I was told would happen. On the portal there’s a ‘system commissioning started’ message but no corresponding ‘ended’ message.
Same happened about 2 weeks ago when the 9.5 battery was installed as master (and the 5.2 moved to slave), another ‘commissioning started’ notification but no end notification.
The battery seems to be working OK though, it charges from solar during the day and discharges in the afternoon as the heating comes on and the house demand exceeds the solar output.
Since we are only on a single rate tarrif, no cheap overnight rate, the battery is set to charge from Solar only.
