I note that the state of the battery charge is often at 5% during the winter periods and wondered if this is likely to adversely affect the battery longevity in the long run ? Also my battery is installed in my garage and again I am concerned if the low temperature is likely to have a similar adverse impact on the battery? If so, what would be sensible precautionary measures to mitigate any likely adverse impact on the battery? Any thoughts and counter measures would be appreciated.
Selor "wrapping" up your battery could help mitigate some of the cold temperatures, some on here have temporary solutions that they add in winter and remove in spring.
Using a cheaper time of use tariff during winter could be an option - again some people are on Economy 7/Octopus Go/Intelligent and charge up overnight and use the cheaper energy from the battery. Octopus have brought out a new tariff called Flux which is supposedly designed for battery & solar owners.
Charging and discharging generates heat, a good way to keep it warm is to use it.
Leaving at 5% gradually dropping, will eventually get down to 0% and the Inverter will initiate a recovery charge back to 4%. HOWEVER......If the battery is under 0C, this cannot happen, as the BMS will protect the cells from charging sub sero. So the battery can end up so lo, that it can no longer power the BMS itself, and goes into a deep sleep. Requiring external intervention to wake it up.
Long story short, if not in use, insulate it.
