Charging beyond set limit of 65% to 79% before my intervention.

L174559 Maybe should've posted on the other thread that you started about this? That temperature looks like a problem with comms on the BMS but the other values look OK. I'd just check that the modbus (data connection) under the inverter is pushed firmly in.

You don't say what sort of inverter you have but AC3s (on current production firmware) have a known bug that they do not respect a lower SoC limit and there's something about the upper limit that requires no automations to be set and if you use GivTCP to not have the solcast auto ... (can't remember). More information would help. If you don't use Octopus automations and don't have GivTCP, give Givenergy a call or web chat and ask them why.

I've a Gen 2 inverter with the internal dongle that was installed on 17 March 2023.
At the change over the comms cable had to be replaced due to a damaged broken wire, [ this inverter replaced a previous Gen 1 inveter that was installed as a stop gap as the first Gen 2 failed at switch on.] So I'm on my 3rd inverter.
It's only recently that I've paid attention to the battery temp. so it could have been like this for a while.
Currently waiting for Octopus to sort out a problem with my Smart2 meters.
The SOC settings seemed to be working as expected up till last night but then I've had it set at 50% for over a week.
The software does appear to be a little flakey?

L174559 Looking at the picture posted to the other thread, I can see it's a hybrid inverter and the battery was charging at 2.5kW from PV at the time of the screenshot. Although the charge rate, voltage and SoC all look feasible, the temperature evidently isn't, although it could easily have been 40°C+. My gut feeling is that it is either a dry joint somewhere on the BMS that opens when it gets hot, or the data connection between the BMS and the inverter drops data packets. I suspect there's nothing wrong with the battery (athough possibly BMS dry joint) and point again to the data connection not being as well terminated as it might be.

Hi Tim even more curiouser when you tap on the "more information" on the battery page the temp reads as s more reasonable 44.1deg C

Also can't find a temperature record via the portal.

On the portal the image of the inverter they use is Gen 1 not a Gen 2 that I have.
Also the portal reports the battery type as "lead acid" is this just bad house keeping on the Webportal?

L174559 I think if it says lead acid it could be a Comms failure to the BMS/Battery.

Probably best to speak to GivEnergy support or the installer.

L174559 As @TX200 says, "Lead Acid" sounds like the modbus data connection is not working properly. A call to Givenergy would confirm the problem and sort out your inverter display issue although it'd be your installer who would sort out the data comms issue.

Thanks Tim you were correct the BMS comms advised as fault as per Givenergy fault record at 02:00 am. So the last install where they replaced the comms cable is suspect. I think that they might have used 6 pair telephone cable instead of CAT 4 or there's an issue with the connections which also caused a problem when they reinstalled the cable.

L174559 Using Cat 5/6 (or any multicore twisted pair) cable for modbus, especially over short distances shouldn't be an issue. Since it's a data cable, the cross sectional area of the conductors is less of an issue than a) good termination and connectors plugged in firmly and b) using a single twisted pair, especially over long distances. I'd hazard a guess that they've used single strand cores and one of the cores is broken but touching the terminal, or a multistrand core with most or all of the cores broken and just touching the terminal.

In fact, if Givenergy designed their inverters and batteries to use standard RJ45 (ethernet) connectors, installers could just plug in a Cat 5 ethernet cable. This would reduce installation errors and replacement, if needed, could be an end-user task.

Tim very valid point RE connectors - I'm not sure why this wasn't done from the start (although all the other designs that (at least externally) look the same use the same screwed terminals...
Shame they didn't go forward with their long body designs, as they would tidy up a lot of installs and plenty of room to fit RJ45 Sockets in there as well!

Hi Tim me again the latest development is surprising. After contacting my installer and Givenergy and passing on the info on the state of my system and waiting for a service visit; The installer called to check if situation was still as reported and on checking it was back to normal as from the night before. And so far so good. It appears that the battery/inverter had a firmware update and some how my system was sorted. So BS and comms cable fault was not the problem. Just passing this on for info.
