Hi all
Had my Hy5 gen 2 and battery installed a couple of months ago, I seem to be generating far more than I can use so I am exporting a fair amount back to the grid. Unfortunately I dont have a smart meter installed so I dont even get paid for it. I have asked my current electricity supplier to install one but keep being told there are no appointments available. Can anyone offer any suggestions on how to get it sorted? I would like to move to octopus but without a smart meter I cant sign up for the tarif that makes the move worth while.

RHardie Quite simply? Unless you are on a really good fixed tariff with time to run - switch supplier. If they keep telling you you can't have one there's something suspect going on.

Sign up for Octopus and during the sign up process you can tick a box saying you'd like a smart meter installed.

You'll go onto the standard variable tariff to begin with then you can switch to Flux or whatever once the meter has been been installed.

exactly! If your current supplier can't make an appointment, move to Octopus and have them install one for you. It won't be quick I hear, but they'll get it done.

I wouldn't hold your breath, I moved over to Octopus with a Smets1 meter and all was fine, they then came and fitted a Smets2 meter early March 2023 and since then it has never worked. I mean the in house display works but there are no half hourly readings available online. I thought they were the 'bees knees' initially but trying to get them to sort my new meter seems hopeless...they just fob you off with 'It'll get fixed when we get to it !!' but all our engineers are manning the phones so they are all busy !!! What a waste of space.

I moved to octopus without a smart meter and then asked them for one, it was quick, gave me a lot of confidence in Octo which has since diminished considerably.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I'll start the switch to octopus energy and hopefully they will be more helpful than my current supplier.

RHardie They'll certainly be more creative with their tariffs . . . I swtiched to Octopus from Eon Next who were old school useless and so far from their tag line 'We are Smart Energy'. I have to say that the service I have had from Octopus has been exemplary.

cluelesscris currently with SoEnergy who are awful. I am constantly £800 - £1000 in credit with them as they keep upping the direct debit each month despite giving regular meter readings.

Octopus installed my Smart meter in April last year and since it was installed it has never actually displayed the correct tariff or daily rates. The reply from Octopus was that sometimes the tech side takes a while to catch up. Sadly, in October last 2022 it stopped communicating with Octopus and ceased to be a Smart meter in any way, needing me to input meter readings manually. Far more important is without a Smart meter I cannot access any of the new tech, new tariifs, R & D etc and my installation of AC 3 inverter, 2 x 9.5 kw/hr batteries with new solar panels is sorely under utilised. Part of my plan for the installation included my ability to load shift at night and charge my batteries during the quiet usage times for the grid and use that power when the national consumption was at its height during the early evening. Not possible without a smart meter. Each week when I chase Octopus, the standard reason for it not being fixed it is an outsourced supplier who fits the meters and only they can fix it and Octopus will try to chase them. All it requires apparently is a Mk 3 aerial to be fitted. Last week Octopus was described by 2 Hgh Court Judges as a "Customer focussed company" in relation to their takeover of Bulb. Perhaps they need to focus more on their existing customers rather than seeking new business they may not be able to support to an acceptable standard.
