Battery capacity advertised DOD versus Operational capacity

Apologies, if this has been covered else where I did search but it wasn't clear which may be my lack of understanding.

I am a bit confused about the whole Givenergy:

  • advertised 100% DOD (because of the battery size being over spec to allow 100% DOD) i.e. 8.2Kwh
    versus
  • Operational capacity (in the knowledge base https://kb.givenergy.cloud/article.php?id=10) which defines maximum battery yield of 6.5Kwh.

When I look at the real world data on my system ( looking at days where we have maximal sun generation so no battery use while charging):

  • In August/September 2022 I was routinely seeing > 8Kwh per day output from the battery (on days where we had maximal sun i.e. no battery use while charging)
    versus
  • In April 2023 I am routinely seeing total battery supply to home of around 6Kwh per day output

So what should I expect i.e. 8.2Kwh available each day after 100% charge or 6.56Kwh per the knowledge base?

If the answer is 8.2Kwh. Then is the battery calibrated capacity and hence available DOD changing and needs re-calibrating or am I missing something?

I contacted Givenergy, and they have initiated a calibration and agree that some cells need resetting. This should resolve the issue and get back to nearer 8.2kWh operational capacity.

I will update this thread with how it goes.

AFAIAA, gen1, 1.5, 2 relates to the hybrid inverters, not the batteries. There are threads on this forum where the battery DoD issue has been discussed and I defer to @hoggy who seems to have the best handle on the detail. If your portal, inverter card says:

then it's a Batt8.2 from which you can expect to get the full 8.2kWh(ish) of energy. Yes it's actually a 10kWh battery of cells but it's a moot point whether you would prefer to buy a 10kWh, 80% DoD or an 8.2kWh, 100% DoD; either way you get the same battery. For branding and marketing purposes, they evidently thought that the 8.2kWh, 100% DoD battery would sell better. If yours is actually the latest Batt9.6, the story is the same; it's 11.2kWh of cells 80% DoD or 9.6kWh at 100% DoD.

I think GE (certainly the installation manual) refer to the 9.6 as being a gen 2 battery as it has its own integral cut-off switch and the orange sockets, and all other battery sizes as being gen 1 (need an external cut-off isolator switch and ring cable connectors). The battery cables also refer to gen 1 /gen 2.
Sure I read somewhere that over time all the batteries will move to gen 2 connections.

I queried the problem with givenergy and they did a recalibration and now I'm back to getting around 8.5 to 9.5kwh per day of battery output. So something to be aware of if you don't think your getting the full battery capacity over time.

P.s. Don't do what I did and agree to the recalibration when you have a full battery as it will get pumped out no matter what your house demand. That meant for me a huge power dump to the grid before the recalibration started.
