When using this setting with a smart tariff how does it work exactly? When it starts charging, does it charge to 100% in one go, or turn on and off depending on the tariff? Thanks

It is not smart in that way. the smart part is estimating costs.
you can set up automations but that can go wrong.
In the automated options it says for stand alone battery it will charge at cheapest time, but doesn't elaborate on that. How does it know? Is there a set time it charges at?
Hawthorn depends on what tariff you have. If it's a standard product yes. Agile octopus, flux etc probably not
It may charge the battery to 100% when you don't want that always. Think that works on which month, e.g. winter is always 100%
If you want more control, don't enable tariff automation, use timed charge instead.
