Power cut

This may seem like a very obvious question, but does the battery supply the house if there is a power cut?
I’ve been assuming that the answer is yes, but has anyone had this experience?

Ubarrow The inverters have the ability to provide backup but only to a limited extent and only if the installation was designed and installed to do so. Your installer would have explained how it works and what to do in the event of a power cut. If I installed the back up power circuit will NOT supply a whole house but provide backup power through a separate circuit. If you did not ask for it it's likely not installed for you. It would have cost more as well

As said above there is EPS capability but only if installed that way. By default, the solar and battery system is designed to switch off in the case of a power cut so that your system stops or is prevented from exporting /back-feeding the grid. This is a safety feature for anyone who may be out trying to fix the line fault from being shocked.

The EPS feature is a limited supply and can only be active in isolation from the grid so there has to be a way installed to isolate your house from the grid supply. If it was done there would be a manual or auto changeover switch to do that and a TT earth rod installed outside.

If you wanted this feature and do not have it right now you can have it retro fitted by a competent electrician.

We had a manual switch over for the whole house done when it was all fitted. Cost £795. We used it once so far (fitted April) for about 2 minutes! Worked perfectly. Just have to keep the use to 2.5kw

we installed a few red sockets as permanent power supply on own circuit... that are useful in case we are not here or for brief power cuts inc fridge/freezer, wifi, telephones etc. These are permanently on without intervention and fed from grid or battery.

But as others say the max on Gen1 EPS is 2.6kw and 3.6kw for Gen2

We also installed a manual changeover for whole house - on the basis its our responsibility to make sure we dont use things like ASHP, cooker, washing machine, tumble dryer etc etc. Our baseload draw is under 1kwh

For new installations I expect people will look more at the new All in One and Gateway which offer Powerwall type EPS
