My setup was installed in November 2022 not realising I needed to do anything with my utility provider (UW) I just let it do its thing. As my generation increased I noticed I was still getting charged for the total amount of units being used enough though half of them was coming from the sun!

I've since completed the SEG form and they've updated my profile to show I've got panels and a smart meter.

My concern is that I've been charged for power I've generated.

Has anyone had this problem and did you manage to get the bills sorted?

RussHead It's unlikely that you've been charged for the power you've generated. I suspect that you are paying an agreed direct debit based on your assumed consumption. If they aren't using actual meter readings but using Estimated values, you won't have had any change to your monthly charge. Check the meter reading on your latest bill and compare that to what the smart meter says for import. Hopefully, your PV system will have reduced your actual consumption so you can call UW and ask them to correct their bill and adjust your direct debit.

BTW, the import and export registers on the smart meter are separate and you'll have to push buttons to get the respective reading.

RussHead You don't say if you have a smart meter or which it is (SMETS1 or SMETS2) but the very first smart meter we had fitted was a real cheapy and continued to register us even when my solar system was exporting. It tooks us months and months or serious arguments with the supplier to get it sorted out and even longer to agree a refund.

You should make sur to keep detailed data from your system and any meters installed so you can demonstrate a baseline profile which you can compare with billing history and show why you think you have been overcharged.

For the first month on SEG, Octopus coded my EXPORT as IMPORT and charged me Flexible Import rates PLUS Standing Charges. I have a SMET2 meter

Octopus agreed, refunded my account and then immediatly did the same thing again UGGH.
I am still waiting for the second promised refund to appear on my account

Octopus's "infallible" Computer's and "brilliant" Customer Service seems to depend a lot on human intervention which is always liable to error.

cluelesscris Morning, I suspect it's the first generation but how would I get that confirmed?

Tim Thanks Tim, based on my bill not changing something isn't right and as you can imagine this is driving me mad as the sun is shining and my bills aren't changing lol.

The good thing about the GivEnergy portal is that I can generate reports that I can send over to UW to make sure things level out.

RussHead Courtesy of Google "A way to be definitive is to look at your electricity meter. If the serial number of the meter starts with “19P” then it's a first generation smart meter. If it starts with “19M” it's a second generation smart meter."

As far as how mush you've been charged. Read your meter and check that against the figure they've charged on you latest bill. Hopefully there will be a difference., you can just quote real mubers at the supplier. The one 'confusion' factor is that you could have been running at a deficit over the winter months and you are only now starting to break even. Check the daily use reported by the meter against the daily import reported by the portal, they should be pretty close but will not be identical.
