Gas tariff forcing elec tariss

Our gas and elec tariffs don't line up date wise. Gas is coming to an end in about 3 weeks. I got the email to chose a new deal with 2 options (variable or fixed). Both deals are very close right now so I was going to go for the fixed rate. Our usage is quite low anyway due to PV divert to the water tank.
Then I get the weird bit: on selecting the new rate it tries to take me off Oct Go for elec and put me on the standard fixed rate so it matches the gas deal. Our Go deal runs until October and I will probably switch to OI or stick with Go. If I don't do anything on the gas rate selection it defaults to variable rate. Will it force my elec to the variable rate too?
I know the reasonable answer is to email octopus so I'll do that, but wondered what others experience is.

Cheers

Do you use much gas? I'd be tempted to roll onto the variable rate (I'm already on it) then sort the gas renewal out after the electric renewal.

We done use too much. And with the costs being so close I wouldn't have any issue being on the variable rate.

I have already received a couple of replies from Octopus. First saying that the elec rate will be kicked off Go as per my findings. I replied questioning the logic behind this and they responded quite quickly with a backtack saying:
"oh yeah Mr G, our bad. Would you like our shiny gas rate and stick on the Go rate for your electrons?"
I asked them to clarify and confirm the situation before I agree. I just want to be water tight before agreeing to anything as it all seems a vague at the mo.

As a final update if anyone is interested:

Octopus confirmed that they are able to move me over (and have) to a new fixed gas rate without interfering with the Go rate.

MarkyG82 I would say look at octopus tracker for gas if you can. At the moment it's £3 something per kWh for gas.

Drop in Oct is predicted and the fix has a nasty exit charge.

MarkyG82 Our Go deal runs until October and I will probably switch to OI or stick with Go.

What are you paying for Go ? If it was a 1-year fix, then I thought that was something like 40p day rate, whereas the current (variable) price is more like 30p. Standing charge may be a little higher, though.

If your car/chargepoint is compatible with IO, have you checked whether you'd be better off switching now ? Not only is the night rate cheaper, but you get 6 hours rather than 4.

(And +1 for the gas tracker, FWIW.)

Currently on the slightly older go rate of 7.5p so same as OI. Got a Passat gte and ioniq EV. The Passat is compatible but the Hyundai isn't. What I don't know yet is whether I need the remote subscription for the Passat to make it work with the remote bit of OI. Need to do some digging.

MarkyG82 hat I don't know yet is whether I need the remote subscription for the Passat to make it work with the remote bit of OI

AFAIK, IO requires that Octopus needs to be able to communicate with either the car or the chargepoint to (a) detect that the car is plugged in, (b) start charging, (c) stop charging. So yes, you'd probably have to enable a remote API on the Passat, and then give Octopus the password so they can control the charging.

Officially, you're supposed to allow Octopus to control most of the charging, but from what I've heard, once you've successfully done the test charge, you can get away with just treating it as a better Go (unless you want to try to take advantage of additional cheap-rate slots outside the normal 6 hours).

Mind me asking what Gas Rate your getting?
I appreciate your rate might be different from mine due to regions (i'm in East Midlands)
Can't seem to get any alternative from Octopus except for a variable rate on gas.

Also fyi I was told that if I wanted to go onto Tracker I had to switch BOTH Electric and Gas.

Different operators seem to have different interpretations. Just keep calling until you get through to someone who knows the rules. I'm on gas Tracker, but Go for electric. (Though have been for quite some time now - I suppose it's just about possible that the rules changed when they opened Tracker up at the start of July.)

dragon2905 Today its: 4.19p/kWh and standing charge is 26.84p/day

East Midlands one for you 🙂
https://mysmartenergy.uk/Tracker/East-Midlands

If you go to the sign up page, it does seem like it will do both, but once you click the button you get the option to select. (https://octopus.energy/smart/tracker/)

They got me switched in 3 days i think it was and back dateded me to the day i submitted the request. Only downside is if you leave tracker you cant rejoin for 9 months. so may not make sense to switch over winter and join again in summer, but we'll see how high the cost per kwh goes.

@dragon2905 we've switched to 7.1p/kw and 27p for daily. Seems a bit higher than average but it's fixed and our usage is very small. We've put effort into improving the house efficiency and about to build an extension while changing all the windows at the same time. House should be even more efficient after all the work. With a heat recovery system we are looking forward to fresh warm air through the house while heating costs are manageable.

Thanks all managed to switch just Gas this time to Tracker.

As you say seems to be, like many many things, dependent on which operator you get.
So annoyed cos we could have, potentially, switched in March/April and the savings would be real!

Keeping an eye on future/forecast prices on gas to see if locking a fixed price is worthwhile.
