Solar only EV charging

QQ to anyone with EV.
I'm thinking about getting EV sometime next year. As I would almost only use the car over the weekends I can have it plugged in during daytime weekdays. The chargers I looked at have all 7kW AC ratings. Is it possible to "tune it down" to only use PV as a source (3.6 or with a possible inverter upgrade up to 5 kW)?
I would like to avoid the situation when the car is charging at 7kW I'm producing 3kW so the remaining 4KW (+convertion loss) takes from the grid.
Is such a setup possible?

Cheapest option is to buy a granny charger that allows you to vary the amperage thereby reducing the charging power to match excess solar (maximum output usually 3kw). A more complete solution would be to install a zappi EV charger that does this automatically in eco mode and will vary the charging output between 1.4 and 7kw to match excess solar power. Note an ev will not charge below 1.4kw (6Amps).

It can depend on the car and the charger. For example, my Tesla will allow you to drop the charging rate via the app.

Or, as @anthonypar has said, some chargers will allow you to charge using solar excess. My Andersen A2 does this, as do some others (such as the Simpson Home 7 Plus or the Hypervolt Home 2)

I was actually Looking at used Tesla ( I know but I'm a Geek/IT).

To be honest, with your expected mileage you are talking about pennies here. 50kWh on an EV tariff such as Intelligent Octopus if charged at night-time only costs £3.75.
It is so cheap that it is honestly not worth fretting about,

I have a Myenergi Zappi car charger and Givenergy solar inverter and battery system.

During the summer months, it is possible to charge the car from solar only using the Zappi eco+ mode. It will throttle the charge depending on the available excess solar generation from 1.4kw to the full 7kw (I would not get enough excess to reach 7kw though). Although two different companies' products they play well together and I have not had any issues. The Givenergy car charger when it comes on the market may be a good option to integrate better and I understand it will also divert excess solar to the car.

On average we can get 15-25% charge into the car on a sunny day. Usually, it is enough to keep us running around for local trips, and only need to top up perhaps overnight to get the car to 100% for a long trip.

It will be a different story in the winter of course.

Everyone say zappi but this charger its ugly and bulky. Its nice piece of kit with good solar and Homeassistant integration. But come on. Size its huge and price its bit on expensive side. Can you do thisame with WALLBOX plus or max? Can they charge from solar? How about integration with HA? Any one have WALLBOX and HA?

HipHopAst Looks like the Plus can do solar charging or Solar/grid and has google and alexa abilities and there is a wallbox integration in HA - no idea if it is the right one TBH.

One of the big issues with any charger is cable management - in particular the smaller one rarely show the cable wrapped around it or otherwise draped somewhere......

I actually don't find the Zappi offensive TBH. And I only have a limited choice due to getting mine as part of a package with the car.

I'm with you on the looks of the Zappi. Once you recognise that it looks like a urinal you can never unsee it....

For me, the Andersen was and remains the best looking and tidiest EVSE that there is. If you have to mount a charger on the front of the house (and I do) then something that looks like it belongs in a boozers loo or something with cables draped all over it is a hard pass from me.

Zakalwe I agree, I tried the eco on my hypervolt and works BUT its slow (but free if suns out)..... I now charge my MG EV4 LR at night when needed and a full charge (which you never do 0 to 100%) would cost £6.08p on octopus go.... from 30% to 80% costs £3.04 and its done in the 4 hr window for 9.5p/kwh

You can get the pulsar max through OctopusEv - but seems to be tethered only. Which unless they have a long cable isn’t going to work for me.
