Export rate increase

So my energy supplier now pays more (16p) for an exported KWH than it costs me to draw a kWh of gas (10p).

Leaving aside any differences in bang per kWh, simple math now would say I should use gas for heating and cooking and maximise my exports - right? I used to try to avoid all exporting in times of plenty because the rate was so poor.

I’ve never quite got to the bottom of this, but we use about 6 kWh of gas for early morning hot water on weekdays. The 3.5 kWh immersion comes on in the afternoon (we face west) and is on for no more an hour, so crudely a gas : electric ratio of 2:1?

What should I do?

Depends whether you're green minded! Most of us put in solar to help reduce fuel bills, so in my book, you go for the the most economical option. You're already doing your bit for the green community by installing solar. Your decision!

david9694 Bang per kWh is significant:

• For hot water, assume 80% efficiency with gas and 100% with electricity, so 16p vs 12.5p.. not much in it.
• Cooking is a different matter - a gas hob with its naked flame is about 40% efficient, whereas an induction hob has very little wasted heat. Likewise, a microwave will always beat a gas oven.
