Stunned no one replied to this. I know there was chatter about a new battery and inverter but did everyone know it would be 9.5kw? Looks like the 8.2 is being replaced by the 9.5
GE just wondering, given the max charge speed of the new battery does that mean a AC4 is coming? Or an updated Hybrid to do 4kw charge/discharge?

Guessing they've just changed cell supplier for another that offers slightly more ah but don't quite fit in the old box.
Or given the height has increased quite a bit, just doubling up smaller cells in pairs taking up a lot more room.
(I was going to say perhaps it's actually just the same 8.2 but they've got confidence in upping the DOD to 93% - however they wouldn't need to make the battery taller)

An issue for me will be if my 8.2 goes wrong and needs to be replaced the 9.5kw wont fit in the same space 👎️
Given that this new battery has a max charge /discharge rate of 80A, I too would expect a new inverter capable of 4kW in/out soon?
The new 8.2 sheet stated 85A max output, this states 80. Also I’m sure the 8.2 mentioned prismatic cells.
If the 9.5 has for example moved to cylindrical cells it would explain a size increase as they’re less space efficient due to the space between tacked cells. If it’s changed to newer prismatic cells maybe they just take more space or have additional cooling hardware?
Most companies do seem to supply a 10ish sized battery so 10 seems to be the go to size.
I do wonder if the smaller capacity batteries are also to be replaced by similar increases making them suitable 8.2 replacements.

So someone mentioned an AC5 unit, I wonder if having multiple batteries will mean charging at 5kw is possible spread over 2?
Midsummer wholesale state that they have sold all their 8.2kwh batteries and won't get anymore as its replaced by the 9.5kwh unit as of 1st Mar 22.
Hopefully it's matched by a set of inverters that can manage higher peak load demands, 5kw is definitely the sweet spot for me as I don't need to then keep nagging Mrs Yandards to try and not have the kettle and toaster on at the same time.

yandards The reason I would like a 4 or ideally 5Kw version (though the battery tops out before that) would be to have my ASHP on the EPS. In the event of a powercut it would be great to have the heating on.
THALL it's the ability to just run the house without keeping half an eye on consumer loads that I'm chasing.
Yes the cost is higher but I'm not getting everything from PV array as its 6kwp versus 5kwp that the inverter can cope with - already seen days in Feb where the array was kicking over 5kw.
Another battery provides a lot more than required but it will allow a buffer to counter the odd poor generation days and potentially some energy trading options.

ASHP on EPS, wont last very long. My ASHP is still on right now, as it cool in the evening, I can see the battery level dropping before my eyes. Put the electric cooker on, then the grid gets a hammering at the same time

In a moment of boredom I made my own 5kW capable Hybrid from the normal one (a hybrid hybrid I guess)
Charges a separate battery on PV string 2 and then discharges it back in the night through the inverter when the normal 2.6kW from the battery cant deliver enough. Surprised how well it worked as an experiment.
3.68kW output on batteries only is really a minimum sensible output for me as that’s the same as the 16A export limitation.
It also means you can hit it with a kettle @13amps (although most are 10A due to wanting one model all over Europe) and still have background loads running without tripping the inverter protection.
4 would be nice for sure, although at 80A max from the 9.5 vs 85 from the newer 8.2 at 51.2v, that makes about 17.5A at 230v ac
Add some inverter conversion losses and I think you’re likely looking in the region between 3.68 to 4. Question for me would be is that max or continuous draw.
Looking at the 110kg weight, I doubt they’ve just doubled up cells👍

TheDragon (GivEnergy) my ASHP draws around 3000w, so I should get over 2.5hrs of it constantly running. Allowing for how often it comes on I should get at least a days use out of it.
hoggy You're a legend ("...moment of boredom...). Do you mean that you connected a separate battery in parallel to the PV string with no control/regulation from the inverter? If so, I guess you'd have to have something to prevent the battery from discharging to the inverter if a cloud passed overhead, or a DC changeover switch to route the solar to the battery during the day and back to the inverter when you wanted it.

Tim its not as simple as just attaching a battery across a PV string but a few years back they used to do some DC coupled inverters which sit on the PV side and either "steal" PV (charge) or "fake" PV by inverting the battery up to 200V+ (discharge) depending on what the house load is from a CT. This sounds an utterly pointless device when you could just go AC coupled, but it was for people on FIT schemes to get some basic storage without affecting payments (as your just timeshifting your solar output to later, rather than taking power from another source, it doesn't technically affect your FIT meter readings. It all eventually goes through the meter one way or another.)
Sadly the only way to get one of these now is second hand as nobody seems to make anything like it anymore with FIT gone.
What this does mean though is i could (for a very special price) get one of these old devices from a neighbour who was going AC coupled, add some batteries et voila, an extra 2.5kW of discharge on demand solely from the sun fed into the Hybrid (there is no way to charge from AC).
I use it as peak load mitigation.
I don't recommend it given the new inverters are coming but it was a fun little project to see if it would play nice.
