Battery USB Stick Compatibility

When I had my system installed over a year ago, the installer forgot (or pocketed) the battery USB stick. This went unnoticed until it came to firmware upgrade time where it (obviously) refused to update as it had nowhere to store anything.
Old USB stick laying around saved the day until a few weeks back when this became corrupted & caused all sorts of weird errors - removing it solved it. (I put this down to these USB's being a bit iffy more than anything rather than the battery causing this - I had a few others of those which over time failed anyway, probably why it ended up as a spare!)

Anyway today I got around to fitting a new 16GB (cheaper than an 8 now weirdly) Sandisk, formatted to Fat32 which the battery flatout refused to boot with at all - so now i'm back to no USB.

Question is: Is there a specific capacity/brand/filesystem of stick the battery likes and if so, what is it?
I appreciate the firmware is tiny however finding small USBs that aren't some random no-name brand these days is a pain!

I am curious as to what this for - I have a usb stick to connect to wifi but this is plugged into to my inverter so is that what you are talking about? - I am new to all of this but I am a software engineer

deepfat No there's another in the battery - Just for firmware, nothing else is on it. I've just had a bit of bad luck with the stick being missing from install & then it's replacement failing.

The USB supplied is a tiny 64MB FAT formatted. I did my battery firmware last week, copied the
BIN files on a MAC no issues.

It could possibly be that it’s formatted fat32 to fat16.

TheDragon (GivEnergy) Would be great to see a video of this being done (or that GivEnergy fitted the USB in the factory, or the installers couldn't commission the system without it installed) as mine is missing too but I'm not 100% confident on taking it apart without seeing how it is done first.

hoggy I have figured out the spare USB stick. I have a working spare. Wondered if you had resolved your problem. I can now be helpful with that.

If you have been given the .bin firmware by GE to install. The process is extremely easy. Attached is a photo of what you will see when the cover of your battery is removed. You need a 4mm Allan key.

Remove the USB key from the battery
Put in a laptop, it will detect it
Open file Explorer (Windoze), or Finder (Mac)
Navigate to the USB key, ensure its empty
Copy the bin file and NOTHING ELSE to the key
Eject the key
Place the key in the BMS where you took it from.
The LEDs will flash, you will hear a beep. Battery should then come back on. If it stays off, turn it on with the button on the right side.

Repeat for all the other batteries, Master 1st, then do them in order

TheDragon (GivEnergy) The issues we were facing were :
1) No USB key in the box.
2) What size/shape of a replacement USB key.
3) What disk format to use to create the new key so it works.

Just tried a no name brand USB from Amazon and all good!

Mine was 64MB

TheDragon (GivEnergy) there was also a 'shape' issue. It had to be the same size as the usb connector plug
and could not bulge out. Yes, FAT16 (FAT)

I don't think I have a memory stick in my battery as I was unable to update the firmware (currently 1040).
There is no longer an option to try updating the firmware on the inverter pannel.
Which panel do I need to remove to expose the usb socket so I can install (or replace) the usb stick.

You will need to raise a call with GE support. To get the .bin file for your system.

It is the main front panel on mine, 4 x 4mm Allen screw.

Just going through the process of battery firmware updates. I love how everyone on the community is giving plenty of warning about isolating the battery before removing the panel etc... Givenergy support were like "you'll be fine, just remove the panel" 🤣

Anyway, removed the panel and there was a USB stick in. It was blank so Adam from Givenergy support sent me a .bin file to put on the USB, have put it back in, battery beeped, now about to get back in touch for them to do an SOC calibration (once I've finished trying to pull as much out the battery as I can with a load of washing and boiling the kettle for a cuppa 😄 ) Portal is still showing the firmware version of 3001 so maybe that will update with the reboot/recalibration?

The battery should have rebooted when it loaded the new firmware.

Beep, lights go off, then come on again.

TheDragon (GivEnergy) Hmm not sure why the same firmware version is still showing then, I will query that when I request the SOC calibration
