My smart meter has been dead for two months and Octopus not showing any sign of fixing it. They say that once its fixed they will use estimated readings and standard variable rate charging as opposed to Intelligent Octopus that I'm on. So I decided to add a meter of my own to generate usage figures. Bought a "Tuya Smart Bi Directional ZIGBEE Energy Meter, 150A Clamp Smart Life Power Clamp Current Transformer App Monitor with Clamp CT" from Amazon. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0C7CNCVQJ?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details
I've installed it and it shows up on the Zigbee list of devices but I'm not getting any data from it. Anyone have a link to whatever I need to get it working? I'm a HA newbie so assume I know nothing!

Even if this works I doubt Octopus would honour the figures this generates, after all one of the key points of the Smart Meter data is that it's tamper proof (realistically could potentially be edited if you were willing to break the law and mess with it).
LordHippos Yes I understand that BUT if I have some figures then I'm in a much better position to argue with Octopus about how much energy I've actually used whilst the meter has been broken. Its going to come down to some sort of negotiation isnt it? I guess they will use some previous readings to come up with an estimate, but which readings? If they use the same months last year that was before my solar panels and batteries went in so my consumption was higher then. If I have some numbers I can at least make a valid case to use more recent months. I do of course have the Givenergy Portal grid import numbers but I dont trust them very much as they dont seem to align very well with the SmartMeter half hourly readings from before the meter broke. Hence my search for an accurate way of measuring which I can compare with the Givenergy portal numbers.

No idea how to get the Zigbee meter working, sorry.
I accept that it's possible, but I have never heard of a smart meter actually breaking down. The common problem with smart meters is a failure to communicate, but the meter itself still works and you can read it manually.
When you say dead, do you mean the display on the meter is blank? Does the backlight work if you press the button? What about the red impulse indicator? What make/model of Smart meter do you have?
BarryForde no experience of this device sorry, but I find that the givtcp inverter import_today_kwh and export give pretty good readings that tie (often to 0.1kW/day) to my octopus half hour meter readings.
And if you have home assistant and givtcp then you’ll have all the stats you need to improve your evidence
I am on Eco7. Off peak and peak import rates and single export rate.
My smart meters have been really flaky and so I downloaded all the EM115 half hourly data into a spreadsheet.
Marked up the peak and off peak slots.
Did all the maths
Showed them daily graphs of my consumption using mostly off peak to charge the battery with a little top up some days.
Compared the totals with the single import and export readings for the month - dont have any peak/off peak split.
Their response was "we cannot accept 3rd party data". When I asked why I hit a brick wall.
So I set out my argument and said "this is what I think, if you have a different answer explain it to me or we see the Ombudsman".
Their reply was "we will charge you normal rate import as that is what the meter shows, but we will make a customer gesture towards your bill". The number was a round figure like £50 or £100 - can't remember.
The result was pretty much where my numbers where, but I guess that is the only way they can do it otherwise everyone will say the meter is wrong.

BarryForde I was in a similar situation and no amount of data I provided them would sway them, even requesting my deadlock letter to go to the Ombudsman was refused so don't expect to get anywhere. They just say the do not accept 3rd party data to look at metering issues.
Rubikcube Its an EDMI ES-12B which was put in as I was on ECO7 at the time. Now of course dont use the 3rd off peak terminal at all, just the single feed. When I say dead the meter's two leds still flash showing wan and lan comms is working but the consumption figures are static and have not incremented for a couple of months now. I can get the meter to display things ok but no usage readings. Octopus say the meter needs changing as its broke
geoffreycoan Thats good to know. Perhaps I should have more faith in the GivEnergy portal numbers. Thanks

Good luck. I had similar issue and am 4th meter change today in 2 months.
I have raised a complaint with Octo to fix my smart meters knowing they can't do it and when the 8 weeks comes up we can go to the Ombudsman and Octo will have to raise a complaint with the DCC.
I have no route to complain to the DCC!
I am years in an smart meters still not working.
I am half way between Keighley and Skipton - not on Mars!
Cdent They just say the do not accept 3rd party data to look at metering issues.
Trouble is, the T&C explicitly say that for any days they don't get half-hourly readings, they'll charge at standard variable rate. (Well, they do for Go, I assume it's the same for Intelligent Go.)
I've been caught out a couple of times when a power cut has meant one or more missed readings. Fortunately, for whatever reason, my meter had been configured with two registers - day and night - and so they were able to charge me at eco-7 rates rather than flat rate, which did work in my favour.

DD yep, that's what they hit me with on Flux, then they tried to take my annual usage and average that out daily over the summer when I imported next to nothing.
Same happened to me, my meters were not sending half hour readings (they were getting daily ones) for electric (gas was ok !) and it was in July/August/September when I exported a lot in peak time.
Lost all the benefits as was just paid the flat rate. I reckon I'm £250 down. They would not entertain any data I had.
Funny how they fixed it in September just as the my export went down to zero
BarryForde Thank you for clarifying what you meant by dead. It seems some smart meters have some reliability issues. Good luck getting it replaced, and good luck with the zigbee thing. In my opinion Octopus should accept any figures that you can provide, unless they can prove they have better ones.
BarryForde geoffreycoan Thats good to know. Perhaps I should have more faith in the GivEnergy portal numbers. Thanks
Just to clarify, the import and export readings I get in home assistant from the inverters match close enough to the meter readings.
I don't have a lot of faith in the givenergy readings, but just had a look and in the portal today's battery charge, battery discharge, import, export and solar generation all match what I have in home assistant from reading (and summing) my two sets of inverter sensors.
Home consumption is wrong though and that is caused by the way the two inverters load-share. I have to calculate daily consumption in HA as a template sensor from import-export+discharge-charge+pv generation as there's no way of reading it direct accurately from the inverters.
But in the givenergy app, the figures are all over the place and differ wildly from the portal!
Daily generation in the portal and HA is 3.1kW, in the app 2.3kW. Import today in the app 24kW, in HA, 29.1kW. Export in the app 5.1kW, in HA/portal 1.9kW.
I don't think this helps you in your quest to prove to octopus what your consumption has been, but should give some info on what data you can trust to have the argument with
Please see attached a snip of October.
I am on Eco7 and the meter is only showing single import register (new meter fitted yesterday now seems to be working) and I will have to do same exercise for 1st 2 weeks of November
It shows actual meter readings v my guesstimate of my use v Rtidey extract data from GivEnergy.
Pretty close I would say.
Octo did not disagree though the correction between peak and off peak was done by a "customer satisfaction" payment
