What kit have you got.
In the portal what settings are you on
The inverter does take time to respond, so was that a full kettle of water heated up from grid, or the initial spike and then the inverter/battery took over.
What does the power graph look like

Chrisg2003 The system will take a few seconds to respond to demand. From background state switching kettle on will immediately show high grid use and then the inverter will ramp up and take over.

GE 3.6 Hybrid inverter with 9.5 kW GE battery.

It was probably not a full kettle as we try to heat only the water needed.

Not sure what settings are of interest but ECO and Timed Charge (02:00 to 05:00) are enabled

If gen 1 the kettle will exceed what the inverter can supply unless its a low power one. Gen 2 etc supply more but will still draw from the grid while the inverter catches up. Largely irrelevant as only for a short time. Squash is much cheaper….

Looks like it is quite normal, the inverter is 3.6 Gen 2 Hybrid.

We got ourselves a travel kettle which is is only about 1kW. Obviously only does 2 cups, and takes longer to boil, but reduces load on the inverter.

On a side note, best kettle i found was the Philips Series 3000 , 1850W for fast boil and low watt's

cluelesscris the key point to realise is that the portal shows a snapshot once every 5 minutes and then joins up the dots. If you turn your kettle on just before the snapshot is taken it will show as grid usage. If you turn your kettle on 20 seconds before the snapshot it’ll be mostly battery usage (as the battery has had enough time to kick in to handle the increased usage). If your kettle boils in less than 5 minutes and you time it right it won’t appear in the graph at all!
