GivEnergy Vs Octopus discrepancy

Good morning

I've recently switched from Scottish power to the standard octopus tariff. I'm finding a discrepancy on what energy I am using from the grid and what the octopus smart meter is saying.

For example on 05.12.23 - 8.67 kWh grid to home but octopus says I used 16.89 but the total energy used including solar and battery and import according to givenergy is 15.71. I don't mind the small discrepancy but import of 8.67 compared to 16.89 is a lot?

It would be helpful to know

  • how long have you had the smartmeter
  • how long have you had the solar
  • what is your typical daily usage ?
    ie is the only recent change the switch of provider, or has anything else changed recently too ?

If possible, compare a day which had very good solar, so that you imported almost nothing from the grid - that's probably more useful than had a day that had quite a lot of import.

  • The smart meter has been installed before 2014

  • Solar has been in place since Feb 2023

Typical usage is around 10-15kwh

I'm being critical of myself but I think any charging from grid won't appear and will appear as battery usage? Maybe that's where I'm getting a little confused

Okay. (You referred to the smartmeter as the "Octopus smartmeter", which was why I was asking.)

Are you interpreting the energy graph correctly ? (The bar graph with different coloured segments on each bar.) On the app, it has 6 icons giving different views of the data: if you click on the house, it shows house consumption and breaks it into contributions from solar, battery and grid, for example. It should show the total at the bottom, but for me the scrolling doesn't work properly.)

On the web portal, it's similar, but there's a drop-down list to select between the various views.

Selecting grid import, it should show a breakdown of direct home usage and how much went into the battery.

(Hmm - something looks wrong on my results... the daily energy graph shows a gap at 3:30am, but the power graph clearly shows that the battery was still charging until 4... oh well...)
