Hi All
Had a system installed in November and generally very happy with it. Main issue is trying to get a payment for what we export. Our energy supplier (British Gas) came and installed a smart meter which is a prerequisite, but unfortunately there is not a sufficient mobile signal (or whatever they connect with) to send the smart meter readings in. Have anyone else had similar issues and if so any solutions? It is somewhat galling to see how much we're actually exporting and not getting anything, however small, for it.
Many Thanks

The smart meter comes as three components, the meter itself, the comms hub that sits on top of the meter and the in-home display. Different types of comms hub are available for poor signal areas, some with external antennas, etc. Your best bet is to get on to British Gas, explain the problem and ask for a replacement comms hub that works in your location. It'll be interesting to see what happens.

You don't have to export to the same supplier as your import, and there are export tariffs which don't need a smart meter.

For example, you could keep British Gas as your import supplier, and go with Octopus for export on their SEG tariff (4.1p/kWh). You would need to 'manually' send export meter readings to Octopus once a month. Not the highest of export rates, but better than nothing.

what type of meter do you have? do you have a spinning disc type?
If you do, you have the national grid as your battery.
You give them a correct reading now and then let them use estimates until the same time next year. As long as your meter has gone up in the amount you have used, you wont be forced to change the meter so the summer will offset your winter.
you yearly bill could be the standing charge.

hamilton It's true that some of the older mechanical meters can go backwards. Honesty is the best policy.

We no longer have a spinning disc meter. They replaced it when they installed the smart meter, which can't connect to the mobile signal

Antony65m We have a very weak Vodafone signal, but Octopus put in some sort of antenna that helped so the smart meter has been fine since last July.

Contacted British Gas yesterday and incredibly they say the smart meter is working as they can see what we're using!!! Sending out a indoor smart meter and we can now apply for the export payment, so we'll see what happens
