Why battery can only charge at 2.4kw?

I have a gen 2 GIV-HV3.6 inverter, but confused why the battery will only charge at 2.4kw? The settings only allow a maximum of 2.6kw, but it never gets to 2.6kw from the grid charge. Can I change settings to allow it charge at 3.6kw? If so, how? Thanks.

Give them your inverter number and ask the question. Sometimes they don't reply immediately but as if by magic a problem can be resolved.

Our 5.3kWh battery has a 2.6kW charge and discharge limit even though our inverter could do more.

Unless you have a 9.5kw battery, the smaller batteries will only charge at 2600w, which is usually around 2400w with conversion losses from ac to dc.

I think we get the full 2.6kW charge rate and the inverter losses just add to the grid load rather than reducing the battery charge rate.

TimHutchings That is not true for our pair of 5.2kWH batteries and the Gen2 5.0 Hybrid Inverter we have. The batteries charge at 3.6kW from the grid and solar.

killythebid Maybe I got that wrong, but are they both charging at 3.6kw each, or is that 3.6kw split between the two batteries, so they're actually only getting 1.8kw each.
I know the Gen 2 can charge at a max of 3.6kw, so I would have expected that charge to be equally split between the two batteries. I could be wrong

TimHutchings The Inverter is capable of 3.6kW maximum. but looking at the 5.2kWh battery datasheet it charges at a maximum of 50A so at a nominal 50V that is around 2.5kW. So two batteries will take the full inverter output and charge just the same as a 9.5kWh single battery with the same inverter.

killythebid But a single 9.5kw battery will charge with a gen 2 or 3 at 3.6kw, so your 2 x 5.2s will only charge at 1.8kw, although if on their own could charge at 2.6kw.

nophead I have a Gen1 and a 9.5kw battery. It charges at 2420w on max charge and exports to grid at 2600w. However, when exporting, for instance in the saving sessions, the battery supplies the grid and home. The grid only gets around 2100w and the house load is 134w, so effectively totaling 2234w. The 356w missing is therefore the losses converting dc to ac.

Perhaps Gen3 is better than Gen1 then. I can charge and discharge the battery at 2.6kW and the losses are elsewhere. I.e. when charging 2.6kW will go into the battery but it will take more than that from the solar or grid. During the Octopus 1 hour sessions we managed to export 2.31kWh. The battery delivered 2.6kW and the rest was running the house (while we were in Tenerife) and the inverter loss.

nophead I did want a gen2 when I ordered in July 22 as they had just come out, but by the time installation was done at the end of October, the Chinese were in lockdown and gen2s were like gold dust. Couldn't get them at all. I was told December, then January, and when it was finally moved to Feb, I gave in and had them fit a gen1.
Unfortunately they've never updated the firmware yet on the gen1s, although I believe they been working on an update all year and it should have been out months ago, but GE's timeframes seem to get expanded!

TimHutchings That is not really the point I was making that with the charge into the two batteries being the same/similar capacity as a single 9.5 battery it charges at the same rate at 3.6kw. It will take around 2.5-3 hours to fully charge from flat in both cases of x2 5.2 or x1 9.5 batteries.

SimonClarke I'm in a similar position but given there's the potential for hardware failure (& associated engineer visit) I doubt that f/w will ever see a general release.

Frankly I don't care - I'd actually prefer it to be frozen at the current version. It works & with the exception of the rather poor MPPT (which won't change) it does the job I wanted.

Would I buy it again? No but that's largely to do with battery issues rather than the hybrid.

There's technically 2x Gen 1s. The early ones (mine) from 2017 to mid 2022 (the ones which need the test running on them to decide if they can run the "fast response" firmware without going bang) - Doubt these will get anything again (if they fail the test.)

The newer Gen 1 (Mid 2022> ) which can take the fast response firmware is probably the only one that will get any focus.

hoggy I honestly can't see why they'd bother updating any of them at this point given its two generations behind & pretty much zero percent of users are ever going to notice the "fast response" 🙂

It doesn't (AFAIK) add the most requested feature for G1 hybrids - two charging slots - so why fix what isn't broken?

I’ve had one GE visit and will be surprised if I don’t get another. To do with EPS weirdness. Surely if you buy a new one now it is likely to get some odd updates!

Vestas it has been said only yesterday by GE that they have not been totally forgotten about, but equally someone higher up can just say 'F that' expense so doesn't really mean anything until its actually out (or not)
