Just looked at my annual report for 2022 - it is telling me I exported 1145.57kwh back to the grid. How much of this, in theory (obviously there will be times when you are using the car so it will not be connected for excess solar all the available time), is it possible to put into the car via the charger? All of it minus small loses?
How Much Excess Solar is Usable?
Well the more battery storage you have the more excess solar you can store and use when you want.
Trouble is your peak generation/excess will be summer and you really want to save that for winter when no sun, but that is not really realistic.
Do you have a hot water cylinder? This year I have consumed 1550 kWh by a Solar iBoost directing excess solar to the immersion heater.
I have just had an All in One installed in November and hence my excess solar will be less in future years.
I have solar IBoost plus from about 4 years ago.
However export income was rubbish then.
I have turned it off - see post 3 onwards https://community.givenergy.cloud/d/423-solar-iboost-integration
quarkrad do you have a chargepoint that is able to exploit excess solar? If you need to get a new chargepoint anyway, getting one that is compatible with octopus intelligent Go tariff - no point sending solar to the car since it's worth only 7.5p in the car, but 15p as export.
Unless you are on FIT, of course - that changes it again.
A problem with charging car from solar is that min power is around 1.5kW (6A). So you can't trickle-charge the car. But if can arrange things so that car has priority, house battery can consume the low-power tails.
Thank you all. Moved into this house 10 years ago - it had thermal panels on the roof so hot water in the summer is sort of taken care of. My current Octopus export is 8p and grid import 9p so hardly any difference. I'm looking to see if new car charger (compared to my existing dumb charger) makes sense - looks like it doesn't really.
quarkrad I'm in the same position - currently on go, but since I currently use 3-pin charger, it's about time I got a proper charger, and have a zappi on order.
At this time of year 8p Vs 9p is, I agree, neither here nor there. Whether Flux makes more sense for summer months probably depends on EV mileage.
quarkrad 8p? Are you on an intelligent tariff? If not you should be on 15p.
At the moment my import tariff is Octopus Go October 2022 v1 (47.95 standing charge and 9p during 12.30 -04.30) and my export tariff is Outgoing Octopus Fixed Lite (8p).
