Flies

I have a lot of flies in the house at the moment. My theory is that they are attracted to the lights on my inverter, which is in the loft (which is otherwise dark). My plan is to cover the lights on the inverter. Has anyone else experienced this?

No.
Inverter and battery in loft with lights on for 18 months.

Dead animal in the loft somewhere sounds more likely than lights…

Flies do hibernate in lofts and get between slates and roof tiles. We live in rural North Wales surrounded by sheep in the fields so there can be a lot of flies everyone I know suffers from the same issues of flies hibernating in the loft in the winter most house lofts will be several degrees above the outside temperature so attracts the critters no matter how cold outside or what part of the country one lives in.

I would not think the lights are bright or warm enough to attract them or make them active in the cold weather. They are more likely to be attracted by the warmth of the inverter and batteries.

I used to have 2 100w tungsten bulbs in our loft and when switched on within minutes it would attract a lot of flies but since changing them to much cooler LED lights it does not happen so much.

You’re experiencing cluster flies, they’re a natural phenomena and not related to inverters or lights, though quite disconcerting the first time they make a visit.

We used to live in rural Cheshire and got them coming into our loft from the fields over winter. The first time I went up into the loft in December was a bit freaky and, yes, they did appear around the house but sealing around the loft hatch with draft excluder stopped them from enjoying the living areas.
They all disappear in the summer, it was only a winter issue (only encountered them when getting the Xmas tree down etc.).

You can buy sticky sheets of paper and poisons to kill them but I left ours because nature’s been depleted enough already and every time you kill a fly a bird goes hungry 😕

Anyhow, poke the words ‘cluster flies’ into google and all will become plain 😊

Surrey. No issues last winter. Another contributor suggests the phenomenion of 'cluster flies'. I have instaled a "flyzapper" to try and solve the problem.

Thanks for all the replies. I have installed an electric "zapper" lets hope that does the trick.
