Solar iBoost “cooling” error when turned on

Is anyone or has anyone else suffered this? My iBoost is in the garage, it’s cold in there 2-4 C. I turned it on today (I manually turn it off for periods where I want to export or whatever), and it’s immediately saying the unit is too hot and to check the vents

I’ve removed the fan, everything is fine and clear. It can’t be hot as it’s so cold in there right now.

Happened yesterday and eventually just stopped doing it and started working.

Wondering if it’s temp related or it’s broken.

pacemaker Sounds temperature related - the unit is spec'd for 0-40C so maybe its simply too cold and that's confusing the temperature sensor(s) when it starts up. Easy enough to test - turn it off again overnight, turn on & if you get the message again then turn it off. Point a fan heater/similar at it for 15-20 mins and try again.

The "unit cooling.." message is probably displayed whether its too hot or too cold - they didn't have memory space for a "too cold" message or didn't consider it necessary.

You should put a 20A DP switch on the output of the iBoost and use that to prevent it heating the tank. The install guide (IIRC) says there's supposed to be an isolator on the output although our installer didn't do that - did it myself.

When you turn that switch/isolator off then the iBoost simply sees the open circuit on the output as the tank being hot and that's what you see on the display when you export.

The iBoost FAQs say this:
"The Solar iBoost+™ is now in a cooling mode – check that the main unit is clear of obstructions and that there is adequate airflow around it. There should be 100mm clearance all around the Solar iBoost+™ . This operation may cycle periodically to maintain standard operating temperatures of the unit.

If the Solar iBoost+ is installed in a cold location such as an out building or loft space, the unit cooling mode may operate more frequently especially in winter."

Not too sure why it would drop into cooling mode if it is located in a cool place though!

Mine is located in the airing cupboard where it is fairly warm. I can't say that I've ever seen that "Unit Cooling" message though.

There's no need for an isolator on the output as the immersion thermostat will limit the temperature of the water. In fact the installation instructions specifically say:
"There should be NO electronic controls or switches between the Solar iBoost+ and the
immersion heater, only direct connection to the immersion and mechanical thermostat are
suitable for Solar iBoost+"

Zakalwe thanks. Yeah I have all that clearance and the vents are all free and working. I suspect too cold to operate. I’m away from home so will check when I get back if it ended up doing anything when it heated up in there.

Zakalwe I have the non+ version which shows a connection "To immersion heater via isolator and thermostat" for single and dual heater connections on the connection diagrams.

Odd its different but frankly its handier than turning the whole unit on/off...

Seems it started working at some point today once it had warmed up, guess that's the issue then!
