Just ordering an EV and now looking at the charger.
Would ideally like the GE one to allow me to manage everything under one roof, but just wondering what the opinion on the GE charger now it's been out for a bit?
Anything that the GE one doesn't do that is a consideration?
Cheers

It does not currently work with intelligent octopus. Apparently this is coming though but I've only heard that from here not officially from either givenergy or octopus

Lab140 the absence of integration with Intelligent Octopus Go is a limitation - only two chargers are currently supported and you get significant savings on this tariff. However, if your new EV is supported directly, it's not an issue.
Getting an Audi so looks like intelligent octopus go is available. I
I think i remember reading that when you are on a car tariff you don't get paid for export, i guess the numbers work out that the savings on the car charging cost outweigh any export income?

murrad You can get export, its painful trying to get it without solar (they tell me their changing options to solve)

Getting 15p export on Intelligent go with solar. They just gave it to me I didn’t apply.

Thanks, maybe it was one of the other off-peak tariffs or I misremembered.
I've currently got a gen2 3.6kw inverter and 9.5kw battery, on octopus flux so should be all good to go once my car order is confirmed.

Octopus were hostile to the idea of allowing export with an EV tariff for a long time. They didn't want people charging battery overnight then exporting at a profit. Not sure why it suddenly changed.
I've just had the GE charger installed (along with AIO and hybrid inverter for solar), and it works well with the Audi I've also just got. Remember to set the charger to "Plug & Go - ON" when setting up IOG. You need to do this to avoid issues when doing the test charge.

DD I do this….i charge at 7.5p, discharge for a couple of hours at 15p then recharge before the cheap period ends. They will surely realise soon….

JasonF Risky though as its not hard for them to scan for this activity and remove offer of whats classed as a beta product and put you back to standard rate - Which for most with an EV will be costly losing that 7.5p.
Though more likely outcome is they will just remove 15p inside IG period
To make 75p (10kWh), I’d be more worried about having to pay 30p per KWh for everything or only getting SEG rates for summer export.
It appears they are starting to tighten up on IO, because plenty are abusing the tariff then boasting about it online.

JasonF not sure that actually violates IOG terms. Though making Octopus pay 15p for your solar when supply is plentiful seems a bit hostile. Assuming you have an EV, if you're smart-charging, how do you avoid dumping battery during car-charging episodes? Perhaps you only do this in night's you're not charging?

Isn’t the point to make us use juice at night? I expect they will probably tighten up and lower the export rate at some time but at the moment this works very well for me. Charge the car and battery at night, tumble dry and dishwash at night, and if the sun comes out make a small profit. Add in the saving sessions and from April cost me about £10 for the car and house - disregarding the initial investment!

Has anyone worked out what you would need to earn to justify the extra cycles on the battery? Especially when throwing in losses during charge/dischage? To me, 7.5p/kwh profit (not taking into account losses) seems a bit thin.
Octopus aren't stupid, they will have done their sums when designing the tarrifs to prevent flagrant abuse. That's why you can't use Agile export if you're on Go (so you cant charge at 7.5p and then export for 25p 16:00-18:00 which it typically is)

Ben Taylor-Wright I think you can choose agile export on IOG (though not standard Go).

I think there's very much split opinion on whether you should cost or take account of battery cycles.
The 9.5 and AIO both have unlimited battery cycles within the warranty, its only the earlier batteries (2.6, 5.2) that have limited cycles, and even then you need to be doing two charge/discharge cycles per day every day to burst them.
Personally I subscribe to the "having spent £4k on a battery I want to get value from it" school of thought, but I know others have different views.

My recollection was that Outgoing Fixed was considered remarkably generous compared with Agile export. The last graph on https://energy-stats.uk/octopus-agile-outgoing-export-southern-england/
suggests that the daily average is only just over 15p during the peak period over the last year.
(And at the moment, the prospect of savings sessions disincentivises export during peak period, since any export at that time on non-savings days will count against you during savings sessions. Which is a bit unfortunate...)

DreadorUK yeah they won’t remove the 7.5p purchase tariff, they would just cut the export rate.
J
#24JasonF
DD yeah only if the ev isn’t charging otherwise you can’t export.
J
#25JasonF
DD yeah I couldn’t believe it when they changed fixed export from 4.1p to 15p. Its fixed until sep 2024

JasonF They might just adjust the table of allowed combinations, so that you can no longer have Outgoing Fixed with IOG. Perhaps Outgoing Lite or Outgoing Agile (so that you can still benefit from cycling battery, but only if you export when they want the power).
My concern and my post is more for in doing it and being found out as such the risk is that as they legally don't have to offer you the beta product (aka IG) they could refuse you access to it and put you on standard rate and there is much you could do about it. So you would then have to move to a different provider yada yada.
I appreciate this wouldn't in all likelihood happen but never say never thus a risk

Any more rumours on when the GE charger will be accepted by Octopus?

It's a bit rubbish at the moment. It's basically a dumb charger. With schedules. Solar and hybrid mode don't work in any way I can figure out. Support are telling me it's working fine while charging at 7.5kw in solar mode while I'm generating 2.5kw.

DCostura The Zappi took a very long time to get fully adopted - it was in beta for ages and ages. Octopus and Myenergi wanted to be sure it everything was working perfectly. Now this may have been in part because Zappi had a pretty large installed base, and so potentially a very large number of people eager to switch as soon as full support was announced, and they didn't want a massive support load when it that happened. GE is presumably in an entirely different league in that regard.
GivEnergy don't seem terribly good at providing working firmware. Their software people are probably quite stretched given how many different products they now have. I'm a bit unimpressed by the number of (fairly minor) bits of my system that don't seem to work properly. So if Octopus really are demanding in terms of quality, it might be a long wait, I fear.
Of course, Octopus do already integrate with GivEnergy for Intelligent Flux. So they've already worked with the GivEnergy firmware people. Let's hope that was a positive experience...
(I went Zappi - I valued getting onto IOG more highly than integration with GE ecosystem. But also I wanted an untethered chargepoint.)
