Monthly report - battery losses?

I’m not a big fan of the GE automatic reports, but I was just looking at January for my AIO and see that it says my battery total charge over the month was 776kWh and discharge was 560kWh.

So - ignoring that the opening and closing SoC may have been different - that gives me a 72% efficiency. Seems very low! Am I missing something?

Just checked mine (Gen2 9.5kWh) for January 219.02kWh charge and 201.98kWh discharge gives 92.2%. Mine is normally around 90%, yours seems very low.

PianSom Probably completely unrelated, but in another thread you show your system pushing or pulling 6kW throughout the cheap period. That's probably going to generate quite a lot of waste heat.

5kw gen 1 and 9.5 showing total charge 190.14 and total discharge 186.09. Totally different system I know but seems much more efficient. Surprised me as the inverter gets pretty hot.

My 9,5/gen3 report claims 149 in, 145 out. Can't complain about that.

Mystery solved - it seems the report is junk.

I looked at the graph below the numbers and saw there were certain days showing a big mismatch. I took the most recent - last Sun 28 Jan. This was a Power-up day for me and a sunny day, so I was sweating the battery - two+ full charge/discharge cycles. I checked the meter logs for the end of day:

and then I looked at the graph data:

(The charge bar showed 34.3kWh - close but not a match.)

So a nonsence report seems to be the most likely cause.

This is very old info, but when the portal was first put out, the reports didn't use the inverters meter data, but instead used the 5min "live" power data and extrapolated. It assumed you were producing/using/exporting X kW for the full 5 mins periods between updates.
This can be quite out if you have "peaky" system loads (i.e. it's caught you boiling the kettle, so it counts as boiling the kettle for the entire 5 mins. Or the reverse, it doesn't catch you using the kettle at all.) same for PV & Battery.

I have no idea if it still works like this or not, I never use them but I'd compare the report for a day against the actual metered data: https://portal.givenergy.cloud/inverter/<serial_Number>/data to see if that brings your efficiency up a bit.

hoggy I was looking at this today too.

I downloaded data from the power graph

  • year
  • month
  • day

First thing to notice is that there are two bugs in the data pull
1) the columns are not labelled correctly
2) the total sums are not a correct addition of the numbers above, but the columns if they had been labelled correctly...

This suggested that my battery losses are a LOT over the last c.12 months to date -

Batt Charge 3134.07
less
Batt Discharge 2431.83
equals
Batt Losses 702.24
= 22%

I then started looking at the meter data from my AIO as hoggy suggests above.

That gave different readings for a random day (13-Feb-2024)

So it does appear that the sampling / calculation might be partly to blame for such a big disparity The biggest errors were for solar generation (erratic on a partly cloud day) and battery discharging in ECO mode is even more erratic given solar + home consumption needs. Plus a small SOC crash to add to the mix...

Looking at more recent months, the raw battery losses based on portal data have come down a lot - it's now more like 11% +/- 1% per month. A few thoughts as to why

  • later firmware - better performance? (Currently on BMS9)
  • warmer months - less heat losses?
  • portal updates - fewer data issues?

So I pulled a more recent (and SOC crash free) day - 13th July - and the result showed a slight improvement in accuracy - albeit a fairly grid neutral day.

26Left I thought someone else must have noticed the data in wrong columns thing but couldn't find it on the forum! I'll try and report it as a bug and see if anything happens. Shouldn't be that hard to download daily data for a month correctly!

ifgow It was reported months ago by multiple people.

Whoever is responsible for the portal doesn't take much/any notice of bug reports.

ifgow The portal isn't just used by GE, its licensed by several other brands/suppliers so I think a lot of minor bugs (ie not showstoppers) fall through the cracks so to speak. Every now and then they get cleared up.
