On my dashboard, the pylon is showing as just a heap of scrap metal! Of course it's a fairly graphic way to show that there is something wrong, and where, but it does not help with identifying a solution. I suppose it explains why we don't seem to have exported anything for a long time, and the batter level has been at 100 per cent for weeks. I've now updated the firmware and the battery is dishcharging - do I need to do anything else please?

Petergroves81 A firmware update would typically run a calibration cycle, which will fully discharge then fully charge the battery. So I don't think this is necessarily an indication that the problem is resolved - the calibration may just override whatever was previously preventing the battery discharge, and it may reappear afterwards.
Sounds like a question for the installer (if it's a recent install), or givenergy support. They'll be able to inspect your system remotely and may be able to diagnose it. We can merely speculate - broken pylon could indicate all sorts of things, like grid over- or under-voltage, or an earthing problem, or ...

DD Many thanks for the reply! The battery is recalibrating, so I hope that once that is complete the problems will go away - no other messages, interesting or otherwise, in the notifications area in the past three months. I have emailed GE and will try the installer too.
It turned out to be a tripped RCD breaker, so getting everything up and running again was a cinch. A lesson for me, to look for the simple answers first, but before I can do that I needed to learn where the simple answers are to be found - I had no idea there was an RCD in there. I wish there was some simple guidance to point users to this sort of thing - maybe I am just not finding it, but why aren't things like this covered in the FAQs?

RCDs can trip when a (oldfashioned incandescent) bulb blows or similar.
