Payments for export

My 18 panel system was installed in July 2022 and works beautifully. But how do I find out about payments for electricity I've exported? I know it's not much, but how do I find out?
I'm with Octopus.

Thanks,

Lorimer It appears on your bill… assuming you've gone through the process of getting an export MPAN and signing up for an export tariff.

Thanks. There's no reference to export payments on my bill. I'll contact Octopus, and thanks for the link too, which is probably the answer.

Lorimer you have to apply for an export tariff. Octopus will apply for an export meter number from your DNO which takes about 6-8 weeks, and from then you’ll start getting paid for export.

Unfortunately they will say that there’s no retrospective payment for export until you get the MPAN.

6 to 8. Is that whats it's taking?

I'm 3 weeks in and the suns shining!

Chaz It could well be longer. Its in the hands of the DNO to issue the export meter number and they are apparently overwhelmed with requests due to the number of solar panels being installed.

Mine took just under 2 months.

Chaz I applied in the middle of June 2023 when I moved to Octopus on the Flux tariff and got my Export MPAN and moved on to the export part of Flux in mid August 2023, but that was only after I intervened and found out from the DNO that they were waiting for Octopus to resolve a query with my G99 that Octopus hadn’t bothered sending on to me.

My advice is definitely to chase Octopus but its not really in their hands, its down to the DNO and they seem to be understaffed for the demand they have. 2 months is not untypical from what I’ve heard.
And annoyingly I could see I’d exported 3Mw of free electricity to Octopus and got nowt back for it.

Think I might have got £30 customer service goodwill payment for them mucking up my transfer onto Flux. Not the same though.

geoffreycoan I can't remember the exact figure but the DNO has something like 3 months to respond to an export MPAN request before you can formally complain. Its very much dependent on which DNO you have, some are utterly absymal and do it all manually, some are on the ball and have the whole thing properly automated.

I think it very much depends on your DNO. UK Power Networks (I am in East England) issued my MPAN about 2 hours after I submitted the application in October.

PaDav6 I’m with UK Power Networks as well and they took 2 months for me when I submitted (via Octopus) in August last year. Having said that when I managed to get in direct contact with the team in UKPN that allocates the MPAN they did it in hours.

Trouble is its all out of your hands. You don’t know what your electricity supplier did, when they submitted it to the DNO, what the DNO turnaround is, when the DNO sends it back to your electricity supplier, how long the supplier takes to process it, etc.
And all the time you are exporting whilst the clock is ticking, you’re giving it to the grid for for free.

UK Power Networks: Took 6 weeks for me from applying on the 29th July 2023 to 15th Sept 2023 to being paid for export.

Exported about 500kW for free. At the time the export rate was only about 4p. So no great shakes (£20) But now that’d be £75.

Took 4 months (!!) to complete my switch from Scottish Power deemed export to EonNext. However there were issues with the Central FIT Register having the incorrect Total Installed Capacity for my solar, and SP were really hard to get hold of and replied far too slowly to emails. EOn were pretty good. In the end I intervened and spoke to the DNO who had an officer call me back. We cleared up the most of the issues in no time and he issued the Export MPAN the next day. I then guided it home.

Most relevant point it that EON still accepted my initial read from when I started the whole process as the starting read, so no money was lost. Understandably they did want to see the email from SP confirming the end of Deemed Export payments.

phoenix Scottish Power are the worst of the majors in terms of customer service, we were with them for years (for a good reason) and they were uniformly useless over 15 years. Iberdrola owned them at one point in time (maybe still do) and that's when things went down the toilet.

I had my system fitted on 12th February. Only been about 3 weeks but reading this I thought I’d chase stuff up. Just spoken to a loverly young lady at the local DNO who said she’s been waiting for paperwork from my installer since 12th and until they have this they can’t progress it on!

This is what we are all up against! Incompetent baboons!
