Battery charging limit

I’m trying it be kinder to my battery as it gets a lot of use in the evening, and is charged up at the cheap rate from 00:00 to 100% early morning.

I’ve set it to approximately half the maximum charge rate

My question is is this needed for LiFePO4 batteries?

I’m trying to further reduce my pull from the grid and wondering is there is any merit in a shorter but higher draw vs longer charge time but less draw, or is it a much of a muchness as I gather the cost would be the same regardless.

But original question being is a lower kWh charge battery for the overall health of the battery?

Midlands_Solar resistance losses increase with the square of the current, so lower power should have less losses that way. Also, charging for longer should allow to dissipate, avoiding hotspots

Midlands_Solar Does the battery have enough time to charge to the level you want at that charge rate?

If so then absolutely its a better option than charging at max rate and have the battery idle for the rest of your cheap rate time.

Vestas yes it’s fully charged by 03:00, but keep the schedule to 05:00 so the battery isn’t drained by the immersion heater that’s running at the same time, as I’ve had this happen this week giving me no battery reserve for the early morning at peak rate before the sun is up

Midlands_Solar Drop the charge rate further then.

Ideally (assuming 100% charge) you want the battery to have 30 minutes or so to idle before discharge.

Aim for full battery at 0430 then it'll idle until 0500.

If its a flat rate cheap period then you want to charge the battery as slowly as possible. It'll save you money as losses will be lower and the battery will be happier, especially in winter.

Edit - assuming a 9.5 G2 battery from 4% to 100% charge its about 4 hours at 2500W so I'm wondering about how much charge you have left at midnight if 1520W charge for 3 hours gives you 100% SoC?
