Current system, AC inverter and 5.2kWh battery with an EM115 in the consumer unit. If I add a second inverter and say a 9.5kWh battery will I need a second EM115 or can the first one be shared over Modbus?
The reason for a second AC inverter is the 2.6kW charge/discharge rate.
These are the questions I should be asking my 'installer'. However I've lost faith in them and not sure that they know much about Givenergy products ...
Assuming you have no PV in the system you mention (ie it's a Givenergy AC coupled inverter, not a hybrid), then if you add a second Givenergy AC coupled, the two inverters can sit on the same communications bus (Modbus), with one designated as the master and the other as slave device with the EM115 also a slave device on the bus.
If your existing inverter is a hybrid with PV and battery attached, then the diagram linked isn't quite correct as the inverters shown have no battery attached and I wonder if it's to show how an AC-Coupled would be retro-fitted to an existing (eg FIT) system. I know that the Givenergy hybrid inverters need to be the master device for their bus but haven't found a diagram showing any Givenergy AC-coupled devices as slave to a Givenergy hybrid. They show several AC-coupled all working together with one master and a number of slaves but not with a Givenergy Hybrid. I may well be wrong, just not come across a schematic for that specific plant configuration. If you do have a Givenergy Hybrid with PV and battery and are thinking about adding another Givenergy inverter and battery for peak load purposes, then I believe you will have to install a second EM115.

I do have solar - it's not a hybrid Givenergy inverter - it's AC coupled. So a second AC inverter would require another MCB in the consumer unit and by the sound of it another EM115. As the consumer unit has just been 'upgraded' to make room for the first inveter MCB & EM115, and the solar inverter MCB I'm a bit reluctant to 'upgrade it again. There must be another way ...
My installer fitted a separate "Solar" consumer unit for my two Hybrids to connect to via a 32A MCB for each inverter. The "Solar" consumer unit isolator is connected by a 10mm (I think) T&E cable going through the MCS meter and connects to a 63A MCB in my house consumer unit. As long as a new consumer unit was placed after the MCS meter for your existing system (assuming you're getting FIT), you could replace the cable from that new solar consumer unit to your house consumer unit with a bigger one if necessary, to carry the additional load and just change the MCB in your house consumer unit. You would then have a "Solar" consumer unit to connect your new AC-coupled plant to.
