Tesla wall connector won't charge if solar is turned on

Hi,

Has anyone else experienced it and managed to find a fix?

Model Y will not charge with Tesla Wall Connector since we installed solar.

It starts to charge then charge port indicator turns red and wall connector light is blue. Car notifications "Disconnect and try again"

When we turn off solar system it charges normally up to expected 7kw.

We had the wall connector before solar system.

Our system was installed recently:

  1. Solar panels
  2. 9.5kwh GE battery with 3kw GE inverter charger

We contacted installer and they said no issue with install. Tesla says no issue with car or wall connector.

Any ideas?

Sounds like an over voltage issue. Does your Tesla wall charger have logs?

Ron there's a thread "EV charging problems on new system" from a couple of weeks ago - not sure how to link to it using mobile.

Have you tried an experiment where the GE battery is charging from grid at the same time as the car? That will mean the inverter isn't trying to push power out, and so shouldn't interfere with voltage/frequency.

Hi @Ron

We have a Tesla Wall connector, model Y and GE system.

I’ve not noticed this problem. Although our wall connector does trip occasionally overnight when it stop/ starts using intelligent Octopus go and the batteries are charging. We have a 100 amp house fuse so shouldn’t be a problem and it charges ok when solar is producing (although we don’t charge it from solar any more since it became more profitable to export all solar Instead on IOG).

Can you provide more info on exactly when this is happening? Is it during ANY solar generation? a large amount? In the day only? At night as well?

If it’s the cars charge port turning red, that may be a problem with the car port. Usually when the lead is blue on the app it means that the car is waiting for a charge to start (waiting for the charger to start). You could try contacting Tesla to see if there is a problem with the cars charge port.

Do you have any timed settings for the car, intelligent charging set up, etc?

Maybe obvious but try resetting the charger and re-boot the car.

Sorry not techie..was is over voltage issue? It has logs but only seen by Tesla and they couldn't see anything useful as far as I know.

Thanks; I'll try some of the tips from there

It happens anytime we try to charge using wall connector since we installed solar &. battery. The car works fine with 3-pin plug charger or superchargers. Tesla says no problem with car which I agree.

No timed settings or intelligent set up etc....

Tried resetting and re-boot ..no avail.

Have you ever tried to charge from solar and battery and could get 7kw with wall connector at the same time?

I am wondering if the solar installation is interfering managing the electricity flow between solar, battery, house and car..

I am at a loss.

So basically you cannot charge the car from the Tesla charger since having the solar and battery fitted? And it worked before? I think you need to go back to your installer whatever they say as there is probably a fault/mistake. I had a charger before getting solar and battery and it made no difference whatsoever.

Update: It works fine when I disable Eco mode on the battery settings - as suggested in the thread you shared. I'll share this with GE see what they say.

Ron so it sounds like the problem is that the chargepoint is in some way sensitive to the way the inverter generates AC. It might be that the waveform is a bit noisy, or just that the inverter is having to raise the voltage too high in order to be able to push power out over the grid supply.

Yes. It works fine. I can get the full 7.4kW from the batteries, or just from the solar (on the rare occasion!), or a combination of both.

DD I'll let GE deal with it and also Tesla. Will update the post as and when

Pete UK oh great. What kind of battery and inverter you have?

I would still check if you have a grid over voltage causing an issue.

It is easy to check if this is happening. On the GE Dashboard. In the powergraph select the grid voltage element to be added to the graph display by clicking on the downward triangle in the top right corner and scroll down the item selection menu to select Grid voltage.

(We have 2x Gen 3 5.0 hybrid inverters and 4x 9.5 batteries).

Also had the wall connector installed and the solar system added about a year later.

It does sound like a potential installation problem, given the fact that the car is charging ok from the 3-pin plug and superchargers. Or maybe the over voltage thing?

killythebid Ok I've added that. What am I looking for?

Ron See if the grid voltage is at or greater than 253v at ant time. Any EV charger will not operate above 253 volts or indeed below 216v.

As the dashboard values are every 5 mins even if it shows just below 253v it may peak higher in between measurements.

If it is getting high it may be because of the solar helping to make the grid voltage get too high and you can report this to your DNO who is responsible for maintaining the voltage in the correct range. They will likely wish to monitor for a while and then adjust a substation or local transformer.

killythebid Thanks; I checked full history it's never been outside 216v - 253v or even near these limits.

Ron OK. That is one thing eliminated from the potential cause.

I assume you’ve checked the settings in the Tesla app as solar charging might behave oddly if the settings were wrong. I can’t help more as we went zappi not Tesla for the charger.

Does the Tesla wall connector have a CT clamp. If it's not an overvoltage which you have said it's not. It could be the Tesla EVSE seeing current flow out of your house and throwing an error. I have no experience with the Tesla EVSE so it's just a guess. Does the Tesla app have any settings for solar charging ? If so have a play with them.

Thanks. I don't think it has a visible CT clamp (I am no expert, mind you). No app settings for solar charging.

Does your wall connector have CT clamp installed to it?
