Apparent battery calibration error on firmware upgrade

Hi GivEnergy,

I have noticed that my battery (8.2kWh) has been discharging too fast after a recent firmware upgrade (see below).

Here is a recent discharge pattern and you can see that the battery use from 4:30am to 5:30am leads to a 50% drop in battery capacity, but it only consumed 0.8kWh. This may be because the calibration step in the firmware upgrade has gone very wrong. The correct amount should have been close to 10%.

I got a notification the other day saying my battery would be upgraded to 3015 soon, and that it wouldn't run a calibration cycle, but would self-calibrate over a few days. There might be some inaccuracies in the reported charge level. Perhaps that's what you're seeing (though does seem pretty extreme - think I'd rather have a proper calibration rather than inaccuracies of this magnitude).

DD I agree. This kind of error is extreme and I think I understand what happened: there should have been a discharge before the calibration, but this did not happen, and the system seems to have simply defined the then current state of the battery as the zero level (discharged level) giving an apparent capacity of just under 20% of the actual capacity. Which fits what I've been seeing over the last few days.

GivEnergy, here is more information about the firmware installation. The firmware installation began at 10:20am on the 27th of May, and this should have been followed by a discharge, which, given the near 80% full battery, should have taken about 2 hours. But it was reported as nearly instantaneous, which is impossible. What may have happened is that the firmware simply assigned the then state of the battery (nearly 80% charged) as it's zero level, and has since been making available only the remaining 20% of the battery.

Notice how quickly the battery appears to recharge after 10:20: it takes only about 1.4kW to charge it fully from an apparent 0%. This is impossible given it is an 8.2kWh battery. Later in the day, trivial amounts of power discharge it rapidly to about 75%. Again, confirming that the battery capacity has been determined at a small fraction of its actual capacity.

There is one issue with this error that bothers me: only those actively monitoring their battery would notice the problem. Kinda worrying that others may have got a degraded system and might not have realised what's happened.

ajmisquitta Yes, from time to time someone posts on here having noticed odd behaviour which turns out to have been going on for weeks or longer.
