Heatpump - COP Calculation

Hi,

I've had a heat pump installed, and I've seen people on this forum mention their COP rating.
On a site survey, the system was given an estimated COP. Upon further research on getting a more accurate COP rating; my Daiken Heat pump doesn't provide information through the app or interface. I noticed Openenergymonitoring selling a kit for £500! (I'm not buying that)
Where are you all getting your COP data from?

DD It seems there's a free software project https://raomin.github.io/ESPAltherma/ which runs on a small device you can plug into the serial port on the heat pump for monitoring. I think it's possible to get the COP that way.

You may also want to check out a Faikin module, which is readily available on Amazon for £30. I installed these in my Daikin inside units, though more for cloud-free control than COP calculation.

You can work out your COP from within the settings of the MMU.
Press the Wheel/Button on the Left.
Rotate until you see "Information"
Press the same button.
Next you will see two options
Electricity In
Energy Out
Choose Electric In (press button)
Rotate the Left button changes the Top and the graph
to Day or Week or Month or Year
Now press the Right Button and rotate to choose either the day, week, month or year.
On the right Hand Side of the screen will be one of 3 symbols
Sunshine = Heating
Shower Head = Hot Water
Σ = Combined Heating + Hot Water
Write down these three numbers

Now do the same thing but go into Energy Out

After you have the numbers for Heating, Hot Water and Σ (Total) you divide the Energy Output by the Electricity In

Eg.
40/10 = 4 = COP of 4
40/20 = 2 = COP of 2

You should generally find that your Heating COP is higher than the Hot Water.
You should see a general increase in both your COP's as the weather gets warmer and a decrease as the weather gets colder.

The SCOP is simply the averages over a year - it stands for SEASONAL Coefficient of Performance.
All this simply means is that over 12 months from 1st January to 31st December the average SCOP factors in the better performance in warm months and poorer performance in cold months.

Cor I wish I could get energy out from my LG Therma V ASHP’s and there was ready-made boxes like the Faikin module on Amazon.
I have the same problem, I have the design COP in the site survey but no easy way to measure the actual achieved COP. I looked at the Openenergymonitoring box and as well as it being £500 you have to plumb it in to your ASHP to measure the heat flowing. Not happening.

There are some similar ESP based solutions for the LG, don’t seem to be as ready made as the Daikin though ☹️

TBF the Onecta iOS app seems to give quite a nice digest of monthly consumption and thermal output (split by heating and cooling for my a/c units). It also produces a comparison with the same month last year. Doesn't it do this for the Altherma's?

So for May I can see I consumed 10.9kWh and produced total thermal output of 43.4 kWh. Isn't that a COP of 3.98?

I see the cumulative consumption reported in the Faikin MQTT data, but can't spot anything resembling a thermal output. Though the GitHub forum suggests this should be available.

I tried getting the Faikin working but it doesn't seem to support the Heatpump using a X10a port.

I wonder if I can flash the faikin with https://raomin.github.io/ESPAltherma/

TBF it says both on Amazon and Github that the Faikin needs a S21 or X50 connection. Are neither of these available on your heat pump?

If no, then there seems little downside in trying to flash. PROVIDED you have the correct connections ready.

Loads of info there about which ESP devices work and how to connect and house the device in/around your heat pump.

As mentioned by @PianSom, alternatively there is P1P2 devices: https://github.com/Arnold-n/P1P2MQTT these wire in to the same circuit as the Daikin heat pump controller and "Madoka" thermostat (I'd recommend sticking with ESPAltherma though).

Once you've got one of these running, you've got yourself a world of data which you can plumb in to Home Assistant or something like EmonCMS to give you nice aggregate and graphed data like this
