Hi, I'm a new user. I can't figure out how to sell extra power. Can you please help.

Mana you just need to get yourself an export mpan (logical meter) and a contract with an energy provider - typically your existing energy provider, but not all do SEG.
The mpan is done through your DNO, and perhaps your installer would sort that for you.

You will need your MCS certificate and the letter from your DNO (local electricity network provider, not your supplier) as the supplier you choose to sell your export to will require these.

If you are a G98 low power system then the DNO letter may not come through for a few weeks after the install as your installer does not need to apply in advance.

Then you pick which supplier you wish to sell your export to and apply for an export tariff. For example these are the Octopus Energy export tariffs.

Many suppliers will have exclusive better rates for their import customers, and if you installed your solar through an energy company then sometimes they have exclusive tariffs which offer a better rate for their installation customers.

If you have purchased a property that already has solar then there is likely already an MPAN for the property, and you may want to phone your chosen supplier for advice. The MCS certificate really should be in the paperwork you have received from your solicitor though, unless it was installed prior to MCS - in which case you might have Feed In Tariff paperwork. The latter pays you for all energy your solar generates, whether or not you use it in the house or export it.

Mana To add to pwdst and DD , go to https://octopus.energy/smart/outgoing/
There is a section that takes you through the process.
It doesn't matter if you are not with Octopus. The procedure should be similar for other suppliers.

For me

  1. I had solar and batteries installed. As part of their 'Handover pack, the installer provided me with the MCS documentation together with a letter from the DNO confirming that my system was compliant. The MCS documentation contained an MCS reference Number.
You nay need to chase your installer for this.
  2. I applied to Octopus to go onto their Outgoing tariff (15p fixed is best). I had to include the MCS number and a copy of the DNO letter. Octopus did the rest and it only took 2 or 3 days.
  3. I now have two MPAN numbers from Octopus, one for import and the other for export (outgoing)
These both appear on my bills and on the app.

The whole process should be generally hassle free.

You should never look back ....... especially when you are exporting your excess solar back to your supplier in the summer months.

Do investigate different suppliers. Some have better export rates than others.

Best of luck
