Hi i hsve only just installed a battery and wondered if anyone could advise how i ensure excess solar goes to the battery and not the grid.

It should come by default in mode 1, which will do that for you automatically.

What's your set-up? We mustn't assume everyone's got GE kit, just because it's a GE forum. I think there's actually tons of really useful stuff for owners of all different bits of kit, on here - and its growing fast!
If you have GE, what sized battery(s) do you have, and what type of battery controller/inverter?
If its a GE battery and more importantly inverter you can set the rate at which you now want it to charge from 2.5kw downwards. This option is only available via the new beta web portal though.
In the case of the settings default modes a GE inverter should charge the battery from any PV not being used by the house demand into the battery until its fully charged - battery will also support any house demand above the PV available.

... another area where controlling the grid draw of the batteries when charging, may be of benefit, is if you're likely to get close to your DNO fuse limit.
I already use our cheap overnight tariff 5hr window, to charge our two 8.2 batteries (each has it's own AC3 coupled controller, so that's a total draw of a little over 6kW). We're also increasingly needing to charge the EV overnight during the same window (7.1kW). Man maths suggests that this will already mean drawing circa 57 amps through our DNO 80 amp fuse.
Add into the mix the Air Source Heat Pump I'm hoping to install, and run during the same window (not sure of the numbers yet, but I'm estimating circa 4kW) and that pulling another 17 amps or so, would mean that at 74 amps, we'll be sailing pretty close to the wind.
We could, possibly, use timers to reduce the total load, but to be able to control the current draw of the ESS charging, might just prove to be very useful.
GrahamRead just control over the system really, Zappi needs 1.4kw spare to run, battery will take 2.5kw and I have about 100-300w of background normal consumption.
I found with the battery taking a full 2.5.kw I ended up being a bit under the level required to kick the Zappi into charge mode and ended up exporting about a kw.
Ideally the automation side would enable a setting of a 'prime' device with the excess going into the battery, ie sustain a minimum of 1.4kw going into the Zappi/car with the varying excess into the battery.
I can now do that manually, drop the battery down to 1kw charge rate so I only need 3kw of generation from my 6kwp PV array so also charge the car.
Thanks for the replies, that all makes alot of sense. I'll have to consider this also as I also divert excess solar to hot water and occasionally charge the car during the day (mainly charge at night on the cheap rate - and I'm well below he 60Amp fuse limit fortunately).

For future-proofing, it may well be worth your while, getting your DNO to upgrade your main incoming fuse to a modern 80 amp one (if the supply will take it).
They should do this at no cost to you, and may (dependent on many factors) even let you have a 100 amp one.
