Has anybody had a look at the stated OCPP support on the charger? There's some standalone OCPP servers that can be used with compatible chargers, which appeals to me.

I'm pondering about getting a Giv EV Charger to replace my dumb charger - I feel it's probably the cheapest way to get smarts? I want to have full local control (can't rely on Internet access) as to when things get charged and how much power is delivered etc, which will support my home automation and maximise my Agile tariff.

Anybody done this or something similar?

Dash you might also be able to do this via modbus, which is already used for local control of inverter. Unfortunately, I don't have any details of how the chargepoint presents itself over modbus (if at all).

There's preliminary support in GivTCP, but seemingly currently only over WiFi (which isn't an option for me), but that seems redundant given the data sheet claims to support OCPP. I would expect there should be a way to defined the OCPP endpoint for the charger to communicate with over HTTP.

Are you using ethernet ? Can't really think why it should treat that differently from WiFi.

There’s apparently a bug in the modbus over ethernet in the GivEnergy EV charger, I think it works briefly and then disconnects. Hard to make this stuff up ….

I'm not aware of any way to manually point it to an OCPP server of your choice so think your likely stuck with GivTCP, of which support seems a little hit an miss.

If your really invested in one, the original Giv chargers were based on the Weeyu M3P charger. I'm unsure if the guts fundamentally changed in this newer shape one (the fault codes remain in parity with the M3P still) but I guess there might be an avenue to dig in to although I highly suspect its locked away in the networking/dongle parts of the charger, much like we can't force any of the inverter dongles to point to any other portal data service either.

I'm not overly bothered by the brand charger, I'd had positive experience with GivTCP on an AIO, and the EV charger seems cheap. But if it seems a bit hit and miss, I'll probably shop around for another brand.

Just FYI, while Zappi does claim OCPP support, it's implemented via an emulation layer on the cloud, so wouldn't give you local control.

Just an update to this if anybody else is wondering the same thing in the future. I emailed GE and they said that their charger uses OCPP only for talking to their own private Internet services, and cannot be changed to something custom - I queried more details on how this could be the case and really claim on the datasheet that it's OCPP compliant, but had no further response.
