I was signed up to Axle when it first came out and looks like I have remained signed up for the latest iteration. Spotted the battery discharging at 13:35 which was odd as it should be charging from the sun. Looked at remote control to see that axle had set to discharge from 16:00 to 17:00. So two problems -

  • I had not notification from axle that they would discharge to the grid today
  • Discharge started at 13:30 and not the 16:00!! The time is correct on the inverter as it charges correctly during cheap rate.

Anyone else had problems ?

G
#2 geoffreycoan

I’d contact Axel and just “confirm” with them that this discharge they initiated is being paid to you at the £2 per kWh rate …

#3 hoggy

Axle have won some DFS auctions today so you will likely see it discharge (although they should notify you)
As such they would likely trigger a charge about 13:00 onwards across the fleet although quite why yours is now discharging instead is a bit of a mystery (unless Axle have got their controller code back to front!)

L
#4 locked

odd indeed, it looks the discharge started at the time the remote control commands were sent to enable discharge from 16:00 until 17:00

C
#5 Coys68

Has anyone been given a unit value for this 'givback event' yet?

L
#6 locked

just received a notification but no value.

On the phone to giv trying to get to bottom of why it started discharging at the time axle sent the api command.

locked On the phone to giv trying to get to bottom of why it started discharging at the time axle sent the api command.

The commands included an 'enable dc discharge'. Is it possible you had another timer configured to cover that time, which activated once 'enable dc discharge' was set ?

L
#8 locked

wow that was hard going, spent half an hour+ with support getting them to clearly understand the problem and not go down rat holes. Lets see what they come back with. Logic suggests a bug that triggered an immediate discharge rather than the timed discharge at the point the API request was enacted

C
#9 Coys68

Are they obliged to state what they are paying ahead of the event?

There was an email earlier stating 'at least 25p per kWh'. If that is all they pay then it will cost me money. My peak rate with eon is over 25p and when you add in the round trip inefficiency........

L
#10 locked

blinkin heck, it started discharging again. This time at 15:45, the same time as a request from axle/givback to re-enable the timed discharge. Looks like its not a one off glitch with the system but something wrong with the way discharge is being enabled.

A
#11 Avenir

No unexpected discharging with mine, though Eco mode was disabled at 15:41, leading to grid import despite a SOC of 73%. I know it used to be the case that Gen 1 inverters needed to have Eco Mode disabled for export, but that's not the case on the D0.190-A0.193 firmware mine is running.

L
#12 locked

Problem solved. Discharge slot 2 was set to a time which meant when discharge was enabled it would discharge for 23 hours and 59 seconds. Slot 2 has now been set to 0 start and 0 end time, which means discharge will work based on the time in slot 1.

The only mystery is how the discharge slot 2 got set given as axle givback was working quite happily earlier this year.

Do you ever use the quick discharge-now button on the app ? I've never really investigated it, but I think it probably works by using a discharge timer, quite possibly to be (almost) 24 hours.

Would be interesting to know what they are paying, I was with Octopus last time and they are not currently taking part..

L
#15 locked

DD i looked at it when first added to the app but don't think i ever tried it.

I'm somehow taking part despite being with Octopus for the last few years. Not really sure how that's happened - you win this round Axle!

D
#17 DD

hoggy I'm somehow taking part despite being with Octopus for the last few years. Not really sure how that's happened - you win this round Axle!

I'm a bit confused by this too - I appear to be signed up to GivBack, but my chosen partner is Octopus.

V
#18 Vestas

DD This is via the portal? If so I see Axle listed as a "default" but not signed up and Octopus as an option.

D
#19 DD

Vestas Yeah. I don't go to the portal very often these days. Had to go in today to renew API keys, and there were various red markers. One was on the GivBack icon, and when I clicked, it asked if I'd finished signing up with Octopus. 'Yes' seemed like the correct answer, and it took me to a page to say that I was now signed up to GivBack with Octopus as partner.

(with an opt-out link). Not sure if this means Octopus can now directly control my inverter in grid emergencies - I don't think my local control script will take very kindly to external interference...

Ah... so I followed the opt-out link, and got:

#20 Windy Miller

I got the notifications in the app but no commands were sent to the Inverter. I had declined a few days ago so the latter is right but I shouldn't have had the notifications either.

V
#21 Vestas

DD Its "tilted" to say the least in order to make you click on the Axle link first, probably overly so.

D
#22 Dean

Each to their own, but for me there is no way I am allowing them to rent and control equipment I paid thousands for only to pay me a pittance for it.

L
#23 lifco

As said last year, your getting paid twice, once from your elec comp, and also from axle

So say your on octopus flux, that's about £0.25 per KW at peak time and lets say axle, pay you the min at £0.25

That's £0.50 per KW you send them, You then have to say is that worth the wear and tear on your system ?

But also remember, did you need to charge the battery before the event and what did that cost ?

Im on the fence with this, it seems the payout is way to low, i want at least £1 + per KW and also i want the normal £0.25 at peak export

Our systems are not cheap

And when you take into account charging cost and wear and tear on your system is £0.50 per KW sound good to you ?

D
#24 DD

lifco So say your on octopus flux, that's about £0.25 per KW at peak time and lets say axle, pay you the min at £0.25

I don't think there are many on Flux in the winter? Most are on fixed rather than agile export, so looking at a 10p loss (before the extra payment) to export then import. Except perhaps if it was a particularly sunny day and batteries are full.

Except maybe Cosy if you can fill up in the early afternoon, but the chances are that you need all that for your heat pump

#25 26Left

I also had an Axle oddity.

I received notifications in the app that I was participating in this on 3-Dec-2024.

At 15:40 my battery was 98% full due to some midday solar.

From 15:40 to 17:00 GE/Axle stopped ECO mode, ie my home load was covered by the grid, so I incurred peak rates that could and should have been avoided.

No battery discharge occurred.

So as it stands, I will end up paying for unnecessary grid power with no upside.

The logs show

  • 1331 Axle enabling DC Discharge for 4-5pm
  • 1542 Axle turning Eco mode OFF
  • 1702 Axle turning Eco mode ON
  • 1719 Axle resetting DC Discharge to prior settings

I have emailed GivBack support for an explanation.

C
#26 Coys68

I think if this matter of grid balancing is to work this whole process has to be smoother. I was switched to taking power from the grid ahead of the recent event and then ran out of battery later in the evening meaning more import from the grid. If I make a reasonable return on the power I export then I don't have a problem. I think I may end up a few pence up but it won't extend into whole £'s - it just isn't worth it. if they want my power then the deal has to work both ways I'm afraid!
I have emailed 'Givback' this morning saying
'I won't be partaking in any future events if the payback is only 40p per kWh. Also, I will not take part in any where you cannot even disclose what the payment will be before the event starts - that is utterly abysmal customer service!'

In principle it seems like a good idea - in practice, not so much!

D
#27 DD

Coys68 I was switched to taking power from the grid ahead of the recent event and then ran out of battery later in the evening

May I ask how much they added to the battery before the event, and then how much they exported ?

C
#28 Coys68

DD
They didn't add any - I was already on around 70% soc (supposedly). I exported about 5.5kWh. The trouble is, the SOC drops much more quickly at the lower end and much more slowly at the upper end so I probably didn't have as much as the SOC was suggesting and by early evening the battery was empty. What I drew from the grid before the event (why can they not just switch over at 4pm without having to revert to drawing from the grid ahead of time?) and what I drew after my battery was empty will more or less offset what I have earned, especially when you take the round trip inefficiency into account.

M
#29 M_J

Coys68 Also, I will not take part in any where you cannot even disclose what the payment will be before the event starts - that is utterly abysmal customer service!'

Yep, you are being taken for a ride if they can't tell you up front what is being paid.

I think the uptake will be low.

Also why I think Octopus are not bidding as they know it is a poor proposition for their customers.

Axel have seem to have less scruples...

L
#30 lifco

I have also removed from this givback, I feel it just not worth it

last year i made about £65

But since then ive had EPS fitted and to me my battery power is worth a hell of a lot more to me, more so if there was a power outage

B
#31 bRhFDKtjRMK9

It seems unreasonable to give away full control over several thousand pounds worth of equipment to make £65 a year, while opening yourself to a blackout scenario.
I signed up last week for a "givback" offer I received, but I think I will take it back. Not worth all the effort to earn £50 or less (they said in the offer that projected earnings will most likely be smaller than last year).

G
#32 geoffreycoan

bRhFDKtjRMK9 All depends on your personal circumstances of course. Last year I made £89 and that was with only a single 5.2 (4.2 usable) battery. Several people with AIO’s were making a couple of hundred pounds.

But last year the rates were such that it made sense to export in the DFS session even if that meant using up the battery and grid importing afterwards in the evening.

Maybe for those on an EV tariff that would normally export excess power at 10 or 11pm ready to refill the batteries overnight on the cheap rate, and have excess stored electricity, the sessions this year will still be worth it, but not for the rest of us 🤷‍♂️

I’ve signed up to the Octopus scheme as I did last year but will see what’s on offer each time and decide whether to take part then or not.

Advantage of the Axle scheme is that it’s all controlled for you, you don’t have to think about what to do in a session. Disadvantage of the Octopus one is you have to initiate the discharge yourself, advantage of course that you remain in control and can decide what to do for each session.

I tend to agree. I think these DFS sessions work well on IOG, not so well on flux. The Octopus ones at £2/kWh+ that is ! Unfortunately last year I missed the £4 one because my batteries were faulty and I missed the 2 hour one because they’d been replaced on that very day and were doing a calibration charge, which I didn’t want to interrupt after waiting 2 months for an engineer 😫.

Last year I just discharged manually to the grid using the app’s quick play button and being able to do so at 8kW I usually pushed out about 7kW+ or so to the grid in an hour. So £14 plus £1.05 for the 15p fixed export; £15.05 total for a £2 session. Not bad. Think I made a total of £150-£200 out of all the sessions. So worth participating.

After each session I had less in the batteries to discharge in the evening or perhaps occasionally I might run out before 23:30 - but no worries importing a small remainder at fixed peak rate, that’s ok as I’d got the max for my DFS export already. Also no point charging the batteries beforehand and incurring unnecessary round trip losses or importing for 26p only to export it later at 15p !

Axle on the other hand would have charged my battery before hand (at peak), which I wouldn’t have wanted (unless I had less than 8kWh left in the batteries).

For 40p/ kW it’s not really worth bothering. And that’s from someone that can push out a lot in an hour! I’d get £2.80. It’s something but not worth losing sleep over.

If I was on a different tariff then I definitely wouldn’t bother. Axle will charge your battery before the event at the expense rate, only pay you 40p/kWh or less for export and then you also run the risk of importing again at a more expensive rate because your battery has run out later in the evening ! If I had a lower export capacity and wasn’t on IOG then it just doesn’t make any financial sense at these lower rates.

Especially if they don’t tell you the rate before hand and then you later find out it’s only 25p !

Seems like Octopus are rightly playing chicken with the DFS. Perhaps if hardly anyone participates in these far lower pay out sessions the DFS will up the rates.

E
#36 Efpv

Cancelled my participation at least until the p/kwh goes up.

A
#37 Avenir

It doesn't sound like last year's generous payments will be repeated, according to this interesting blog post from Axle, back in the summer: https://www.axle.energy/blog/dfs-news

This will probably mean lower prices - certainly lower than the £3000/MWh we saw for test events in 23/24. However, it will also offer more opportunities for dispatch, since DFS participants will be called upon whenever they can provide power at a competitive price.

For those who are manually instructing flexibility, this will probably be a net negative: more frequent, less valuable dispatches will increase operational costs and potentially disenfranchise users. For assets like batteries and EV chargers which can provide automated flex, this change will likely increase the total value for minimal additional effort.

#38 nophead

Octopus are offering 60p per unit between 6 and 7pm this evening.

B
#39 bRhFDKtjRMK9

Just received this warning on e-mail:

You'll be helping the grid this month
Hi John,

The power grid will be strained this month. We'll use your battery to help out during peak periods.

This month, we'll sometimes adjust your battery's charge and discharge schedule. You'll earn at least 25p for every kWh that we import or export.

You can always override our schedules via the GivEnergy app.

Cheers,
The GivBack Team

nophead Octopus are offering 60p per unit between 6 and 7pm this evening.

Another piss-take from Octopus. Who's going to export when the import rate is 20p higher than that?

B
#41 bRhFDKtjRMK9

And here we go. Export now between 16:00 and 17:00 at 40p per kWh. It's my first session since I installed the system not long ago.
Everything works ok. Except for myenergi Zappi charger which detected surplus export electricity, and started charging my car now, instead night scheduled session. I paused that, and export at full power continues.

C
#43 CW

bRhFDKtjRMK9 So they will pay you 25p for imported energy, presumably in readiness to export later (and again pay you 25p) so 50p per kWh - but what happens if your battery then doesn't see you through the evening, do you then have to pay to impot that energy? Or can you set the system to have a certain SOC by the end of the session?

#44 nophead

Vestas Me. I will almost empty my battery by 7 and get 86.2p for each of about 2 units and then import those units at 25.01p. So a profit of about £1.22. Hardly worth bothering but still a profit.

G
#45 geoffreycoan

Vestas I've just put the rate override into Predbat, have turned the heat pump off and will be exporting for the hour.

The import rate from 6-6:30 is 81p, from 6:30-7 is 68p. Octopus are paying 60p for the saving session export on top of my standard export rate of 15p so as long as I don't have to import, its still making something.

Import rate from 7-7:30 is 45p so even having to import then because I've run the battery out, I'll still make something. Not a lot but something is better than nothing

D
#46 DD

bRhFDKtjRMK9 Except for myenergi Zappi charger which detected surplus export electricity, and started charging my car now, instead night scheduled session

You can configure the zappi to ignore exported power. Just have to up one of zappi's parameters to beyond your AC generation limit. I think it's the export margin but I'd have to check.

Battery is fully drained, as it is in most of the winter days anyway, we have high household consumption.
According to app, I've exported only 3.17kWh, for which I will be paid £1.268 at 40p per kWh.
Now, I am importing energy for the house at 22p, until 22:00 when it will drop to 13p. I will probably import that 3.17 all during 22p rate. Overall, that's a tiny net profit. Yet to determine if it's all worth it.

B

DD You can configure the zappi to ignore exported power. Just have to up one of zappi's parameters to beyond your AC generation limit. I think it's the export margin but I'd have to check.

My zappi only have export value slider 0 to 100% in Eco+ mode. It will always wait for export. Which never happens in my case as I have very small PV array. But today export exceeded the threshold (minimum 1.3 KW of export) and it wanted to charge. There is no option to disable it completely.
Other mode, Eco charges at 1.3KW at all times, increasing it if there is enough export.
And last mode, Fast, charges at full speed.
All modes gets overrided by my night charging schedule, but I don't have option to ignore Export values completely, unless I physically remove CT clamp I guess, so it would always read zero? IDK.

B
#49 bRhFDKtjRMK9

Oh. I just realized. I can put it Zappi into Stop mode. That way it will not charge at all. Schedule overrides all modes, so maybe it will work that way? I think I'm going to test it tonight.

D

bRhFDKtjRMK9 the export margin isn't available through the app - you have to configure it on the zappi main unit.

Are you on IOG (through the zappi) ?

Oh, interesting! If Stop mode doesn't work, I will do that next.

DD Are you on IOG (through the zappi) ?

No no, I am on "dumb smart" Tomato Energy. 22p in the day, 4.7p at night. I charge PHEV on a night schedule only.

D
#52 DD

bRhFDKtjRMK9 yes, stop mode should work. But setting up the export margin would make it automatic.

However, tomato doesn't offer an export tariff, so you probably do want to usually send export into the car ?
(On IOG export rate is higher than nightly import, so never want to charge car from export, hence my use of export margin.)

B

Great! I hope so, this could solve it without needing to adjust settings inside zappi panel.

I never export, I use all my small PV generation to power my home, so Tomato Energy tariff is good for me.
I set all heavy devices to work at night, car charger too. They all use import to operate.

In a very sunny summer things may change but I'll see next year.

#57 nophead

Vestas Well actually it didn't work because my battery decided to drop from 30% to 3% after 25 minutes, so we only exported for half an hour but then ran from the grid at the expensive rate. Probably because we haven't run to zero for many months so it lost track of the SOC.

I regret getting a firmware update in April because before that we had no problems with SOC.

We are in Tenerife for the winter so normally the battery never gets to zero. Also in the summer it never gets to zero and the first time it did we got an under volt error. So the battery SOC only works when it charges to 100% and discharges fully regularly. That is only around the equinoxes for us.

D
#58 DD

nophead We are in Tenerife for the winter so normally the battery never gets to zero.

Missing an opportunity to cycle the battery to earn some money?

B
#59 bRhFDKtjRMK9

DD yes, stop mode should work. But setting up the export margin would make it automatic.

Stop mode didn't work, it was fully stopped and not charging.
So, next thing will be going into the panel.

#60 nophead

DD We charge between 2 & 5am on flux and run the house from it. Our load when away is just a bit less than the battery capacity. If there is any sun it reduces the amount we put in and may export a few pennies but there isn't much sun these days. I don't see any value in exporting the battery between 4 and 7pm to get 26.2p because then we would buy some at 25.1p, which would be a loss due to the inverter losses.

The saving sessions where profitable last year but this one was a fail due the battery losing its SOC and the rate being poor. We probably made a loss.

D
#61 DD

bRhFDKtjRMK9 Stop mode didn't work, it was fully stopped and not charging.

err... yes - that's what stop means. I assumed you were putting it into stop mode only for the duration of the savings session. (Unplugging the car would, of course, be an alternative.)

Avenir You can schedule Stop mode using myzappiunofficial.com

Thanks, that is also an option, but I will try Export Margin setting first.

By the way another session today, for me 16:00 to 17:00.
Battery is at 73%, during the session it should export for one hour at maximum speed of 6000W, and there may be some juice left after the session. So, I will not charge it now (to avoid inverting losses), will leave as it is.

A

Yes, that sounds like the one. I think it's saying that when it sees excess export, it won't start using it until it has reached at least the configured value. (It might also mean that it should always leave X exporting, rather than consuming all the excess, but I've seen different opinions on that. That gives a way of preventing it discharging a battery.)

That was exactly that, thank you. Axle session went by, zappi did not charge, despite seeing 5 KW being exported. All good!

#68 26Left

26Left quick update on this - after another failed attempt to discharge on the 11th and another chase email from me, they finally got it right today. The explanation:

“It looks like this was caused by your DC Discharge limit being initially set to 100%. The GivBack team just tweaked this to 30%, so your battery should now be discharging for today's event.”

B

Final update to the story, zappi continues to be on 7000W Export Margin setting, Eco+ mode, it has ignored +5000W export event in the day, and charged the car overnight like usual, using my night schedule. This option works beautifully. I will keep it on until I have excess of power in the summer, if it ever happens, that is. Thanks again for sharing!

#70 hoggy

A curious development, but I have 2 inverters (non plant setup), with 1 CT on the incomer at the smart meter and the other on the main CU (theres some Henleys between the two which T off to various places, but basically one inverter doesn't really know anything about the other unless the one measuring the main CU is either flat or can't cope with demand, where inverter 2 kicks in as it sees a pull from the grid.

Anyway, Inverter 1 is in Axle, inverter 2 is not. I manually trigger inverter 2 during Axle events.

In theory, Axle should get data from the Smart Meter to generate payment details, but it appears they perhaps do not?
A) because I could see the balance from yesterdays event last night, before data from smart meter had landed.
B) it takes no account of Inverter 2's export (it should be double what it is) as an output to the grid.
C) it seems to use a baseline value that is not real. Due to my odd setup, inverter 1 sees grid import if it can't cope BUT it's not "real" as its actually just Inverter 2 picking up the slack. Baseline is in realty 0 but Axle think it's around 620W.

So I think it's just using giv data, not smart meter data. Has anyone else seen similar?

G
#71 geoffreycoan

hoggy That would be so wrong because the Giv import/export data isn’t calibrated; its often close but its not what you’re billed on

Maybe they use the Giv data as a preview of the actual data that’s then updated when the meter data comes through? Be worth seeing if it changes later today

A
#72 Avenir

geoffreycoan in the blog post linked above, it states that asset metering - submitting measurements from an EV charger or battery - has no restrictions this year.

I think last year may also have been asset-metered for me. Had no end of trouble getting Octopus to read the smart meter data for regular billing, but Axle results and account crediting were instant.

However from the DFS stats Axle have had more DFS sessions than Octopus, 3/12, 11/12, 12/12 and now today, this is only the second Octopus one.

And Hoggy makes an excellent point, 15:30 slot is 70p, 16:00 is 88p and 16:30 is 99.99p ahead of the DFS session.
Even ignoring conversion and charging losses you don’t want a pre-charge.

“Join GivBack and pay extra for helping the grid”

Doesn’t have the same ring to it….

I didn't get an octopus invite email again...

So maybe I should have gone with Axel...

M_J Maybe they have lost your original signup and you need to signup again?

On the octopus website it says that they are not sending whatsapp messages this year, I think the email is the only notification.
Obviously check spam etc

Yep checked spam and after not being invited the 1st one I signed up again. My dashboard shows the first session results and that I failed to register for the session.

I will be in touch with Octopus later today...

Just a glitch in the matrix or they are only inviting enough people to cover their targets and I am not on the list as I hardly saved anything last year as I didn't have my export licence set up until after the savings sessions finished..

M_J Glitch in the matrix I bet.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there are DFS sessions on Saturday and Sunday, the Agile price prediction is for high prices, around 80p and 70p respectively

M_J it's regional

You have to click a link in an email to a typeform page to sign up... but I think they lost my signup and it didn't count me as joined the session :/

I wonder why they have stopped using WhatsApp and the Octopus app for the invites. Email seems to be the slowest method.

I have signed up for the savings scheme and my dashboard shows the session yesterday as that I didn't sign up for that session.

No email received to give me a registration link.

Anyway sent a complaint to octopus.

BTW if it's a regional sign up and limited then I should be told sorry you can't get involved and my dashboard shouldn't show me as a failure to register.

nophead Last year I don't think I got a single notice on the Octopus app and the WhatsApp messages never seemed to be in time. Fortunately the HA Octopus interface worked well so they weren't needed. This year just having email and no interface is disappointing.

SJB it says in the octopus website “Remember to opt in to each Session via email to earn Octopoints. From mid-January, you have the option to opt in on the Octopus app and dashboard too”

They did send a tweet out about the saving session yesterday, but it points you to the email to signup.

Wonder why when the API, app and whatsapp were all working last year we have gone backwards in capability this year? The API is now showing yesterdays event but it didn’t all day yesterday or indicate that there was an event going on

M

geoffreycoan but it points you to the email to signup

If you don't get an email with the link you can't register for that specific event.

I await a response from Octopus...

M_J agreed. When I next get a session I’ll see if the link is shareable

Thanks my guess it is encoded with your details to be able to activate your specific account for the savings session.

But who knows it might be shareable, so thanks for the offer.
