Solar to EV charger

I'm trying to do as much preparation work as possible before an electrician comes to install my givenergy charger.
The charger requires a connection between the charger and the EM115 (which was installed when the Hybrid inverter and battery were commissioned) so that the charger can use any spare solar power.
There is no possibility of me being able to run an ethernet cable out to my garage (all new building work).
Does anyone know of a solution to this ?

Billywizzer on the assumption that you already have a 32A-capable supply cable to your garage for the EV Charger and you don’t want to run any additional data cables, I think that some Givenergy installations use LORA modules for the Modbus comms.

If on the other hand the electrician needs to run a new SWA cable to the garage, ask him to tie-wrap a Cat5 cable to the SWA. Actually maybe two as there will be something else you want to put in there in the future.

If you need to use LORA. devices, maybe check if further expansion for other devices is feasible. You may want to wifi to the EV or future EV or security camera or who knows what?

Thanks for the reply.
Not heard of this LORA mobos before.
I have already installed a 10mm swa cable and it's not possible to run an ethernet cable without it looking dreadful.
Do you mind providing a more in depth explanation of how it would work.

Billywizzer don’t get drawn into thinking this is a custom solution. The Givenergy way round to extend Modbus over wireless is to use an industry standard Modbus-over-RFI connection. It is technical and I don’t pretend to understand it as I’ve never had cause to make use of it. I’m just glad that the advice I had was to install a Cat 5 (or two) cable alongside any SWA to remote points as it’s easy enough to add access points or use some cores to extend Modbus.

You can get ev ultra cable which is a mains cable with an Ethernet cable built in. For ev specifically

I'm waiting for August when the GE charger is available (my installer says).
Excuse my ignorance, but is there any need for anything but a 32A cable to the charger? I thought the GE will have Comms via WiFi to my system? Or am I missing something? Thanks

pjb904 It'll need a comms cable back to the EM115 Meter or direct to the inverter: Install Manual
To me it seems a massively missed opportunity for it to not utilise either wifi or Ethernet to perform this function if you already have a GE Inverter - as it allows so much more flexibility in charger placement. I've been corrected in the past that there are rules about charger power monitoring having to be hardwired - such that if the CT metering fails it defaults to a "safe" output to prevent inadvertently pulling more than the main house fuse allows.
To me I see no reason why this can't be done over wifi as in either case of CT or Wifi failing the charger doesn't know the total house power anyway - so long as in those cases it defaults to a low output what does it matter? (but i don't write the rules)

Think @andyvee you sent me a link once before with the specific legislation/document explaining it - but can't remember where!

hoggy I can't remember which bit of boring regulation it is in now TBH - but when DNOs insist on it being a load monitored EVSE (60A cut out and/or looped supply) then the CT clamp to EVSE has to be hard wired was the general gist of it. If it is being used for monitoring for solar excess generation etc it doesn't matter, it can be a wi-fi connection.

pjb904 for what it costs, even if it’s never used, I’d advise a 6mm2 cable which could carry 45A if short enough (you just might be glad to be able to install a 13a socket off it at some point - granny charger for visitors) and at least one cat5 cable for Modbus/Ethernet. If the extra capacity is never used you’ll have wasted tuppence h’apenny but if you need the additional capacity/connectivity you’ll be glad you did.
