Existing system how to wire eps

Hi,
My system was installed a few years back, and no eps circuit. My inverter and battery are in the attic, along with a comms cabinet for broadband etc. I want to wire in the eps to power only the comms cabinet, to keep internet and a few sockets going for mobile charging etc.

What are the mimimum requirements for me to do this, do I simply wire the eps output to a small consumer unit with rcd and a say 20a mcb, and then wire a socket from this to my comms cabinet ?

Do I need to have seperate earthing for the EPS circuit, or can I just take the earth from the EPS side ?

You might need a new earth, if you haven’t already got one, as you can’t rely on the grid earth.

But a simple way of doing it, is to install a RCD socket from the EPS and plug everything into that, but I'd recommend also installing a UPS fed from that socket to your equipment to avoid the small switch over time.
Also a separate CPC (earth) is required to be installed from that socket to an earth rod.

I would ask yourself a couple of questions.

1. How many power cuts do you have.
2. What are the duration of said cuts.
3. What is the total load of the circuits you wish to remain live
4. Without a UPS would a break in power upset the devices?

As said you need a separate earth for the EPS circuit and to get that into the loft could be a challenge- and costly.

Depending on the answers to 1,2&3 something like this Cyberpower UT650EIG Ut Series, 650Va/360w, 4 IEC Outlets, AVR, Mini-Tower, GENERATOR Compatible https://amzn.eu/d/2TkEc5o might be an option and is less than £50.

Won’t support a huge load or for long but might be a better option - or at least cheaper!

I live in the sticks, so power can be gone for a few days sometimes!

I only really need to run a router a switch and sockets for PC and phone charging so very light load.

With regards the earth, is there a reason I can't use the existing building earth?

TX200 the earth from my house is its own earth rod, so do I need another one for my Eps?

Eamonnogorman If your power is down for days I doubt relying on the battery will be that good - especially in the winter when solar production is lower - of course if you can charge at night and have a full battery every day just in case, then that is a possibility - but you still would need a UPS to cover the break in power that will happen (may change with firmware updates.)
As for load, with what you state I would guess that's about 250w (With losses that could be higher at the battery)- so from a fully charged 8.2kWh battery you have about 32hours of "run time" - Of course having your broadband router and PC up does rely on the local network box to also have power to be of any use!

anglefire Yeah, I think maybe a UPS to manage the switchover would be a good idea.

Looking at my comms cabinet, I reckon the usage is even lower that what you state, the switch and access points are using less than 50w, and its only a small router then on top of that. My laptop charger looks like only about 65w, so with all that you are at say 150w ?

My battery is 5kwh, so that would give me a few days run time which would be fantastic. I work from home, so no internet, no work :-(

Most outages are over winter time, and my battery will be charging every night for that.

Eamonnogorman might be okay, but possibly best to check with GivEnergy or one of their installers. Depends if the islanding of the unit also disconnects the earth as well as live/neutral.

I've now read the EPS install document and you need to provide an earth on the EPS side as it isn't connected within the inverter.
